Any 2.5" SATA II disk will fit. Unplug that one and remove from the caddy. Give me the model number from the label so I can find out what capacity it is (was)

The HDD just made the most awful sound (like something inside it scrapping against something it shouldn't be) when I picked it up and very gently squeezed it between my fingers - then a message on my PC along the lines of - your external drive is not being recognised.

Now I know I'm no computer expert but I think I can with great certainty that my daughters HDD is definitely FUBAR!!

So - as to a replacement - ebay? ebuyer? any thoughts fellas??

    Thanks, rich

    Hitachi
    HDD : 5K500.B-320
    HTS545032B9A300 type 5400rpm

    Does this help???

It would do. Just under that very flimsy cover is the hard disk platter, spinning at a minimum of 5400RPM. You just applied the brakes!

    See my previous post.

    250GB?

    £50 should do it.

    320GB maybe a little more.

All of these are direct replacements of the same capacity.

Ouch - you must despair trying to educate people like me!!!

So me gently squeezing it between fingers is not the best thing to do and probabaly instantly curtails any thoughts of a career change to become a computer technician!! To be fair no smoke or smell of burning disc was detected!!

Am kinda pleased with myself so far today however in buying a £13 replacement keyboard and successfully replacing for this laptop (sure my local computer shop would have charged me more than this) and also being - I think - 75% towards fixing my daughters laptop - once the new HDD I'm guessing I require - arrives.

    Saw that.

Either the WD or Samsung will be fine.

In answer to your next question :D

Don't bother adding extended warranty as it has a 3 year limited warranty already!
