OK good news I think - the HDD is spinning and a new device is being shown that I think it asked me (before I started typing this reply) if I want to instal.
On My Comuter I think I have a new choice which says
SYSTEM RESERVED (E:)
72.3MB free of 101 MB
Good news or not????0 -
That will be the system restore partition.
Is that the only new drive it shows? How do I add a signature?0 -
Its showing 3 hard disk drives - local disk C, system reserved E and local disk F.0
-
Take a look on local disk F - can you see a number of folders?
In particular, is there a Windows folder?How do I add a signature?0 -
Assuming it isn't completely broken (which it could be)
If you don't need any data, try acer erecovery at bootup to do a factory restore
if you do need any data, use a boot cd to get it off http://www.paragon-software.com/home/rk-express/download_old.html , then use acer erecovery
if you ever get it booted again, create rescue disks, create windows recovery discs, create windows system image.
find the brand of the hard disk, then go to the manufacturers site, and download a hard disk diagnostic, and run it
if the hard disk really is broken, take the machine back to the retailer and quote the sale of goods act, instead of spending more money on a replacement hard disk, it's 18 mths old, not a reasonable time to break, should be fixed for free, nothing to do with warranty, this is uk law.
This is misleading info.
Until you establish exactly why the drive has failed, you cant go storming in.For example, a lot of laptop minidrives are ceramic, if shes dropped the lappy at any point the drive discs shatter like glass.
Conversely, the disc format could be corrupt, and establishing why might be impossible.
He needs to establish exactly was has happened first, the Eu g'tee only covers faulty manufacture or workmanship.**** I hereby relieve MSE of all legal responsibility for my post and assume personal responsible for all posts. Not good news I think!!
I click on the F: and the green bar at the top (trying to open something I guess) has moved along slowly and now not progressing (after approx 4/5mins) beyond say 97/98% completion.0 -
Also - and I guess v.important that should have mentioned in my first post of today - it transpires that my daughters laptop stopped working when it had a book thrown at it by her younger brother!
So sorry should have mentioned this earlier as guess by reading Lincs post this could be a big factor in the laptop now not working.0 -
all is not yet lost...bear with it. If not, you could run a chkdsk on it whilst in the caddy............Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
Ok, close Windows Explorer.
Click Start. Type CMD in the search box.
When CMD.exe (or just CMD) appears in the programs category, right click on it, and select Run as Administrator.
In the command box that opens, type
chkdsk f: /r and press the Enter key
(note there is a single space before f and another after :)
If you see a message that the drive will be checked on next reboot, then reboot the laptop. Otherwise wait while the drive is checked and post the results. How do I add a signature?0 -
OK - just popped up in red
