Yea, its a waste of time, the low level format is screwed, which might even be due to physical damage to the MBR due to a head crash.

Personally id cut my losses and shove in a new HDD, Itll take 6+ hours to run CHKDSK on that one and you still might be no further forward when its done.

Even if you do succeed in getting it to format the media is going to be unstable, i wouldn't trust the drive with anything important.

Yep thanks for your help Lincs but Figment has been a massive, massive help so far so am really reliant on his advice in the first instance yet I'm sure both of you know you're stuff but honestly do not want either of you to think I'm listening to one more than the other.

Just v. grateful I seem to have 2 experts helping me out!!

So fig, have updated the chkdsc program and am guessing it's not looking hopeful.

Should I assume that the HDD is FUBAR and start the process of sourcing and buying a new one that is compatible with my daughters laptop??

20+ consecutive segments unreadable = a big lump gouged out the hdd by the head.

Bad sectors spread slowly across the drive (like a rash, its wierd), and the drive isnt trustworthy now, you could end up doing this all again in two weeks time.

Ok guys so what do you think - the current HDD (I'm still assuming this is a correct abbreviation of the hardrive) is basically knackered.

So do I need to start looking to source a replace the HDD with something similar or is it not quite as simple as this??
