When my contract was up with BT I negotiated Unlimited broadband for £10 a month as Sky were offering that too. They agreed and we have no problems with our internet now.

I think in these days of so much Wifi etc you can use a lot more internet without even knowing you are logged onto it. All our phones and tablets use our BT hub so that must add up to a lot of usage on its own.

  • Im going for unlimited too when this contract ends, dont think it will be with BT though, i know what you mean with the whole wifi thing , however only laptop and phone(which has auto update for apps off) the fact that its just an email to tell you then no further info or solutions is a bit frustrating.
  • Firstly, apologies for resurrecting an old thread.

I am having this problem too. I have always used around 2 - 3gb per month and over the last few days I have been using this amount per day.

I've changed the password on my router in case someones using my wifi connection (which I doubt, but you never know), but this hasn't stopped the problem.

I'm not very techie but know if this goes on on I'm gonna be skint!

David from BT I've contacted via your details.

    Please help.

I thought I'd put a bit of an update in case it helps anyone.

BT have been really helpful, I've dealt with the same lady all the time and she has always rung me back when she said she would.

After trying various things it looks (hopefully, still monitoring it) like turning off the "wifi hotspot" which I think is connected to my home hub has put my usage back to normal. BT are going to monitor it until Friday and then ring me back.

I'll post another update at weekend hopefully. :)

I too have 10GB broadband which is usually not a problem. On 23rd December I got an email saying I had used 8GB. We never download films although my daughter watched one half hour programme on iplayer over xmas. As soon as I got the email I turned the wifi off my phone which is what I use most, but accepted that just maybe we might go over the 10GB limit in December which would only be the second time in the last year (at least).

To my horror I got an email from BT yesterday saying we'd used 17GB in December which would cost an extra £10.60!! NO WAY!!

I phoned BT and the accounts people said they couldn't tell me what had made our usage so high, but technical may be able to help. Put me through to technical and after queuing was told they couldn't help me as it was accounts who dealt with that.

I asked to be put through to a manager, and was asked if I wanted accounts or technical, to which I replied whichever could help me. So I was put through to a number with a message that the office is now closed!!!!

As we're right on the edge of an exchange our BB speed is ridiculously slow (a friend who works for Sky told me it's slower that dial-up), so I've been thinking of leaving BT and going to Virgin, as they won't offer me a decent deal for fibre-optic. In fact that's why I'm on the forum now looking at the best option when I stumbled on this thread.

Can you help me BT rep?

  • I am waiting on a call today as apparently this is a very unusual and rare problem (i think not) since i contaced bt through chat, passed from here to there and back again, phonecalls try this , try that etc etc etc.
Chat advisor asked me to disconnect hub on 13/01/14 so the hub reset, since then in the hub manager it says connected for 1 day 21 hrs and Data transmitted/received (GB): 0.014 / 0.25, yet my bt usage monitor has increased by 9 GB in this time.

So this month my usage is just under 40 GB in 14 days.

Last month my total usage was 4.8 GB ( no change in browsing habits, no new gadgets and the usual maintenance eg anti virus, malware updated etc.

i'll see what news the phonecall brings if it comes, meant to be between 12 - 2 pm.
  • Well i got my call back ( not that it was of any help however the lady i spoke to was nice) another hour of my life i'll never get back.
They can see looking through my history with bt that this is very unusual but all we can do is offer you unlimited bb for less than what your paying at the moment ( no thanks )
It was a solution to the problem that i was looking for .
I would advise anyone thinking of joining bt to think again as they have been no use whatsoever in dealing with my problem regarding there made up usage monitor figures.

y parents who are in their 80s have just told me that they are experiencing the same problem with BT. They have had their broadband connection with them for several years, and have recently renewed the contract. The BT useage monitor page says that their average monthly use is 0.22 GB and that they have used 32.4 GB 1-15th January - which is a BIG jump.

They have a BT vision box but only watch live TV and programmes they have recorded onto the hard drive. The laptop spends most of its time in its bag switched off, and is only used for playing solitaire and occasional web access. The only smart phone in the house is switched on occasionally, the wifi turned on, the weather forecast updated and wifi switched back off again.....

Because of the threat of charges for overuse, they have upgraded their broadband package......

    Just another update from me:

My usage has been back to normal all week so this was obviously the problem and BT have said they will refund the extra charges I have incurred.

    Thanks BT :T

  • Good on you littlemissbossy , i ended up with a remote session with a bt tech person who had a look at my hub manager info and my bt usage monitor info and he agreed that something was wrong so bt will not charge for data above my usual 10 GB , i also asked while on one of my many chats if they would disable bt fon(still shows as active but guess it may take a bit of time) I have been keeping an eye on my data daily and seems to be ok over the last couple of days.
