Nice people thread part 6 - thrice by twice as nice :)

Brighton must have the highest NP density, after Greater Hertfordshire.
I once did a map in a previous NP thread, but PN got in a huff because she fell off the map, so it was never developed any further.
Always felt Johnny's further north and east of his current position.
Surely silver, CK michaels and viva must be closer together.
I'm surely south of Chewie.
Purch, fc123, JohnPierpoint, Morag1202, MysticTrev and Spirit would fit on here even if H McT and sss would be out of the frame.
Percy was in Bradford maybe? Yorkshire more surely?
StevieJ said he was in Cheshire I think.
I'm clearly making this all up as I can't remember all the info.
And of course another big arrow for our most southerly poster, GeneraliThere is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
@lydia
How are your solar panels doing in this worst summer in a long time?
I bet they are still doing ok.
I have a load of friends with solar installation company's that I work along side but they seem quiet on that side of things.
I may well go ahead with it myself but I'd really need to build my extension to get the best angle.
Well, since you ask...
I got in before they started dropping the FiT rates, and I have a near-perfect roof for it: 30 degrees pitch, due south facing, no shading, and enough space to put a 4kWp system on it. So my results aren't useful to anyone considering getting some, but here are my stats anyway:
For the first year I generated just over 3780kWh, paying me a bit more than £1740. Since the extra borrowing has added £50pm onto my mortgage payment, I think that makes me £1140 up on the year.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
It's a special place and interesting but rather claustrophobic. Used to take students to visit there. I'm more of a fan of science /natural history museums. GDB's DS should visit the National Museum of Scotland - tiny but stunning- a kind of a compact "Museum of Everything".
Also like Folk museums like the People's Palace in Glasgow
The Museum of London is the closest equivalent down south and I love it. Of course they're always small and quick to tour.
My only problem with meeting up in London is I've lived here longer than anywhere else and, much as I love it, I don't see it through a tourists eyes.
I've never done the boat or bus tours. Have any other NPs?
I love london but have never done tourist things. My dad was scandalised recently when i said i would like to go to the tower of london, he said, 'you should ave been, why didn 't your mother take you'. He could not undersand my raised eyebrows. I din't think my mother has been either , but i do not know that.0 -
Where are you putting your extension to get a better angle for the sunshine...350 miles to the south of your house?
I was thinking the South of FranceWell, since you ask...

That's good that it will pretty much pay your house "energy" bills after costs. :T
There are far more solar systems than probably anyone imagined and may be one of the reasons why the energy suppliers (cartel) are increasing their prices up so much.0 -
I find the whole solar thing confusing. We are going to be ready for a solar thermal panel or two by spring possibly but will probably do nothing out of fear of getting it wrong.0

I considered solar panels under the FIT scheme when we extended.
However, a neighbours' trees at the end of their garden could potentially grow and cut off the light source for these panels for a significant period of the day. It influenced my decision not to proceed.
I could sit here and moan about how people don't really think how big trees can grow, but it would be a waste of time. As it stands the rules on trees and shrubs are not really on your side.
(I'll just dig a borehole to tap into GeothermalI am sure that will please the neighbours!)

We cut down trees, and plan to plant others, but its far enough from this point to make shade not an issue. If we are alive and here when it is an isdue we can crown reduce. Our boiler has three inflows and can take three sources of fuel. Ours will be wood, solar thermal and geothermal in some form( probably borehole). We ave lots and lots of unshaded oace for pv, but not the money to do it.we looked at a free electricity scheme but we are too far from something or other you needto be near to.

The odd positioning of our house (single property on the road) means the borders on all sides are formed from the end of people's properties. Typically this is where they place trees, shrubs, and hedges.
When someone plants a Silver Birch tree more or less up to a concrete/wood fence (within a foot or two) I don't think they really get the idea of how a tree grows. Just allow a bit of growth room is my argument. They have a garden close to 30m long after all !
Hey, ho, they will be convenient home for my army of pet squirrels0 -
I ended up in the a&e in the royal London on a Friday night, not because I was drunk but because I tried to combine interval training and a norovirus. It was pretty quiet in there, there was only one drunk bleeding from a head wound, the main problem appeared to be old ladies who were pretending to be ill so they had someone to talk to.
I had a similar experience in st Thomas's when I was the drunk bleeding from a head wound. Although I had been mugged rather than fighting. I would have been a bit annoyed if I wasnt treated just because I had been drinking, but then I wasn't abusing the staff or other patients. A&E was absolutely dead, although it was 2am by then. All the staff were playing cards...0
