Here's the other thing, say "£2 jar". They have £2 in their pocket, so they put it in their jar; next time they go out they have no money so take out a £20 note ... and as that makes them feel really rich they spend about £18 of it ... and put £2 in the jar... repeat.
If it were me I'd keep the first £2 in my pocket, feel poor and not be tempted to buy things, thus "saving" £20 in my bank account.0 -
And the ones who say they budget.... then seem to be surprised that Xmas is in December each year and bleat about how much it costs and they have no money for it .... and if you trawl through their postings they seem to be "budgetting" by spending every week/month's money as it comes in.
If you were REALLY budgeting you'd have started saving a pot for that from January!0 -

Seriously, that's the way their mind works.
Example that you can see repeated again and again on grabbit board.
Buy something at Tesco that is £1 cheaper at Asda, that gives you a JTD ( just the difference) money off Tesco shopping from Tesco. = £1 "saving".
Now you use the £1 voucher on your next shop, buy something for £1 that is buy-one-get-one-free, so you buy 2, So you have saved £1 from the BOGOF and using your JTD voucher brings your total bill down £1 + £1 = £2 "saving".
Then, in a feat that explains the country's economy, you add the £2 to the £1 and tell everyone you have saved £3, just by shopping at the more expensive store in the first place.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. This is like the old joke about the schoolboy who arrived home all sweaty, so his mother asked him why. "I ran all the way home behind the bus, so as to save the bus fare." Mother: "Why not run behind a taxi? You would have saved even more."No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

it doesn't work if you get more cash out sure, but i have travelled most of my holidays on saved twenty pences. I now do the same, save twenty pences from my change out of my budget, as they are small enough to do with out but big enough to add up quick.
Dh is a nightmare with change, always dumping it. I counted up well ovr 100 quid of his. Drives me mad.0 -

i am the same, i just dump it on any surface around the house. i hate having change in my pockets, and i hate using change to buy things with.
whenever i dump it, the mrs takes the some of the £1 coins out and uses them to buy coffee / lunch, and puts the rest in the jar. the jar is overflowing now, i wouldn't be surprised if there was at least £300 in there.0 -

I put it in my draw and then when I come to take it out again for parking or whatever it has magically disappeared. DW and DKs then chide me for having forgotten about the existence of the 'change fairy' again who works in sort of the opposite manner to the tooth fairy except that I have never got any more teeth?I think....0

I dump my 1,2,5 and 10p pieces in a sealed piggy bank, only to be opened when we go away in the summer. The amounts are so tiny the only difference I notice is that my handbag is a little easier to carry but it sure adds up over the year.
Ok, we are not talking mega money but £20 or £30 makes all the difference for us.We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0
