As this is a money saving forum, just advise the buyer that by not having working aircon they will save money on fuel costs.

Forgive the lack of technical terms etc. but just a rough draft?
    Dear Mr TryingItOn,
I am writing to you following your request for a refund on the Honda Civic purchased on [date purchased]. I wish to refer you to the [Sale Of Goods Act/Consumer Right/whichever applies] in regards to second hand cars from private sellers. I have followed my legal obligations by accurately describing the vehicle and not misrepresenting the car, and your signature on our contract (copy enclosed) confirms the date and time that you were happy to accept the vehicle "sold as seen".
I would also like to refer to your text dated [date here] that states that the air conditioning was in working order in the vehicle after your purchase.
Taking these facts into consideration, and also the diagnostic report from the Honda garage, I believe that I have fulfilled my obligations. After speaking to [air con specialist's company name here], they have stated that the failure diagnosed by the garage is not something that could be temporarily fixed, so the failure occured after purchase.
It is due to these factors that I am not going to offer a refund on the car. If you are unsatisfied with this outcome, I request that you address all further corresponse to my legal advisor.
    Regards,
    HoagieKat

Don't know if your house insurance would accept correspondence directly so might want to remove that blurb, but I would make it clear that you're not changing your mind here. If they believe there's 1% of doubt in your mind, they may well leap on that.

The buyer even signed to say it was sold as seen

That carries absolutely no weight in law.

I don't knmow why you're even bothering yourself with this issue OP.

Tell the buyer, in no uncertain terms, that you will not be fixing the air con and leave it at that. No more answering texts, phone calls or letters.

Let him crack on with his solicitor etc. Most of what he says will be bluff anyway.

    How about this:

    Hi -name removed-,

In speaking to an air conditioning expert (-name & number removed-), it seems that the field coil and clutch is not a predictable or degenerative failure, it either works, or it doesn't, and it'd be impossible to temporarily repair this part. It is a failure that could happen any time, and according to your text at -time and date-, the air conditioning was working after you left my house. It is simply unfortunate that the failure happened on your journey home after purchase.

In seeing the report from Honda I am satisfied that the air conditioning was working at the point of sale, the vehicle was described correctly, it was sold as seen and tested, and in taking further legal advice, I am under no legal obligation to repair the fault.

I do not wish to be contacted by yourselves any further regarding this matter.

    Regards,

    Me

Do not. Do not, enter any further correspondence. Advice to continue contact on any level is misguided and wrong. If you are a genuine, private seller, your dealings ended with the buyer when they inspected the car and, as it was to their satisfaction, they paid for it.
Go ahead if you want a needy, annoying penpal, but otherwise, close the dialogue and move on.

He has now stated he is going to deliver the car back to me within 48 hours with a solicitors letter stating the problems.

    More bluster.

(A "solicitor's letter" carries no more weight than anyone else's!)
