For a goodwill gesture, have them bring the car back to you and you will have it fixed for them at a garage of your choice.

How far away do they live?

Offer it, I can't see them coming back 120 miles. You offered, they refused.

I'm not a dealer, so I shouldn't really have to do any of this! :(

No I'm not accepting liability, I was advised by a legal adviser that I might want to give a good will payment towards the issue, which is not accepting any liability or giving warranty.

That doesn't sound like legal "advice" - your legal position is that you are not legally liable for this. (Which was the question asked when you started this thread)

It was from my home insurance legal advice line.

It's more common for the relay to fail, rather than the field coil, have the garage checked the relay before deciding on the clutch itself.

Stick to your guns. It worked when sold and was not bodged to work. Do not give a goodwill payment, what happens when something else goes wrong in a week or twos time? Tell them that since inspecting the car and taking it away it is their responsibility, and any further correspondence will be ignored

Yes the garage checked the relay (it was a main honda dealer). I have details of the diagnosis.

    assembly.

Apart from the fact the tech couldn't type, it looks legit.

While that is true, it's not the OP's problem and so would advise against corresponding with the buyer any more (even if it is to offer useful advice)
