My friend is only letting her Jack Russell have one litter and has homes for three already. None of whom were known before she allowed the mating.
Its not either/or, if the government and local authorities tightened up the rules around breeding (or even enforced the existing animal cruelty laws properly) the puppy farms could be gone before we knew it.
Why is she choosing to breed from her Jack Russell? What's her motivation?0 -
Gorgeous looking dog OP!! She'll be very glad when it's all over, I bet! I reckon there's 9 in there but I'm useless at guessing. My terrier had a litter last year and I thought there were 4 or 5 in there. She delivered a week early and had NINE!!! She was also a really bad mum and we had to hand feed for the first two weeks which was exhausting.
And no, I don't feel at all guilty. I could have sold the puppies three times over and had the luxury of picking and choosing the best homes for them. I advertised them at 3 weeks old and had large deposits down for all of them by the time they were four weeks old. If Mum hadn't been so useless at being a Mum, I might have done it again in a couple of years. As it is, she's been neutered now.
I'll keep my fingers crossed that it all goes well for you and her x0 -
Thank you for all your nice comments! I've been up most of the night as Kizzy has been restless, but no puppies yet. Sure I'll have plenty more sleepless nights as her whelping pen is in my room.
This will be the last thing I say to any one that is saying I'm a irresponsable breeder. I do not keep a waiting list as I am not a big breeder! I will not breed my dog when other people think its the right time, if I had a waiting list people would of had to wait for years, which is not likely to happen. My puppies are not sold to just anyone, and I have already turned someone down as although she was a lovely person, I do not think she would of managed well.
Usually if you decide you'd like a puppy, you don't want to be waiting years, I personally decided I wanted another ridgeback and got my pup a couple of weeks later. For the amount that they cost it's not really something you'd just go and buy for the hell of it, most people who brought my previous pups were people tha had already had ridgebacks and love the breed (that was 8years ago before you judge that)0 -
OP, I think advertising the pups for sale at 4 weeks old is leaving it a bit late. The sooner you have a list of interested buyers the better. There will always be some that change their mind or you don't have enough of the required gender to sell, but it gives you time to weed out those that aren't prepared to visit the pups a couple of times or are just unsuitable. It will also eliminate the impulse buyer who sees an ad for cute puppies.
I bred 2 litters of Labs (many years ago) and always had lists of people interested in them BEFORE they were born. The stud dog owner should also be prepared to forward your details if they have any enquiries, as will breed clubs - though you usually have to be a member. You can also advertise them on the KC website as soon as you register the pups.
BTW, I think there are 8 pups in there!"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0 -
Sorry I didn't really make myself clear that was just an example of 1 of my first litters. These are already advertised on the sites that will allow it.
8 sounds great! I am hoping thats all she'll have (not because I don't think they'll sell, just because I think more can be hard on the dog)0 -
Just like to add that lots of people want certain breeds due to different circumstances, myself i would look at getting a 'hypoallergenic' breed of dog or cat as i have eczema and it wouldn't be fair on me or the animal to have a mongrel that i couldnt love and eventually have to get rid of.0

I'm allergic to dogs, I have two hypo-allergenic breeds from a rescue!
Don't assume that the only dogs that end up homeless are mongrels, one of mine is kennel club registered, the other probably started life in a puppy farm.
As more people want pedigree dogs, more are bred so more end up in rescue.
Bichons in particular are always in rescue in substantial numbers and they're a great breed for people with allergies and for first time owners.0 -
The rescue parade at it again?
OP just wanted to share an important moment in their life. Why do other people feel justified to criticise?
As stated ridgebacks are rarely in rescue, those that are are usually quickly snapped up by breed club rescues.
I hope everything goes well and they all get lovely homes0 -
Hi At a guess I would say 5 or 6 pups, hope it all goes well. Keep mum nice and cool in this weather.0
