It would have been more responsible to have more homes waiting than potential puppies before breeding.
How can she have homes waiting when she doesnt know how many pups there will be?
Congratulations on the birth of the pups that have been delivered so far! Cant wait to see pics. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I was going to guess 11, but I think at this late stage that's probably cheating.
(Note - this bit's off topic) Person One, I endorse everything you say, but I would say that every good breeder had to start somewhere. My GSD breeder started to breed as she got a pup that ended up with horrendous hips, was so bad she had to be put down at a young age. Consequently she is meticulous about the dogs she breeds from, selecting for both hip/elbow scores as well as temperament.
She now has a massive waiting list for her pups, wonderful, wonderful dogs, and keeps in touch with many of their new owners. But... she started with one litter.
OP, hope the rest of the babies are delivered successfully, and mum is well afterwards!0 -

I completely agree Caroline, but this isn't the OP's first litter, its at least her third, from a second 'pet'.
I'm pleased to hear she has done all the health checks though, she's clearly at the better end of the breeder spectrum at least, I just hope all these puppies find wonderful homes and that the OP at least considers waiting until she has a long list of homes lined up before breeding next time.
Sadly, ridgebacks do end up in rescue, no breed is 'safe' from ending up unwanted.0 -

Lots of breeders have waiting lists long before their dogs are even pregnant. It prevents impulse buying, it gives the breeder time to get to know the owners, and it means that if a buyer has to drop out for whatever reason there is a backup home ready and waiting.
Lots of owners, although admittedly not enough which is the biggest problem, are more than happy to wait a while for a pup from healthy parents and a great breeder.0 -

Trouble is this type of breeder are thin on the ground. Demand far outstrips responsible supply. So when pet owners allow their animal a litter it provides a great opportunity to get a few extra well cared for dogs into the system and reduces the demand at puppy farms. However, because pet owners do not have a business plan in mind when allowing the breeding they may well take a little longer to find good homes. They have not ignored the need to find homes and breed willy nilly.Truth always poses doubts & questions. Yes she has had the nessarary health test, yes she a great example of the breed, and her co effecient % is lower than the breed average, the stud is also lower than average and this makes the pups score even lower. Would you like to know anything else? I'll get back to you if my puppies don't sell and then you are more than welcome to have a go.
For all you people that came on her for the same reason as me, to have a nice friendly chat WE HAVE 6 PUPS so far, still some to go though. She's doing great, the 1st one came at 237 this morning.
Well you were having a go at responsible breeders, implying that having homes lined up for the puppies is a sign of puppy farming. I was just pointing out that is incorrect, not trying to have a go. Your friendly chat has included some misconceptions about breeders and rescues so yes some people will question that. I'm glad the health checks were done and I do hope the puppies find good homes, as I already said.0 -
Ohhh I'm too late to guess now....but omg 6 puppies......just....omg..... *is glad she is not a dog*0
