I didn't realise the op had kids. That makes it all worse and should've been mentioned really,as it's pretty darn relevant when things like that go on in the household!

One would hope that they were away from home for the night, but even so...

    Really?

There's a whole new angle to the tale...

Bad enough when it seemed to be a severely dysfunctional relationship between two adults only.

There are children in there too?

I've worked with violent people in the past in terms of rehabilitation and I've seen males and females do a complete 180. I've seen and heard a lot worse than this particular situation (skulls shattered, broken legs, etc...) and really do believe if they both want to, they can change with the right help. I don't think they should give up yet and it's not as simple as just 'leave him'. Real life is not so black and white.

I'm guessing from the fact that he can't see his kids, and he was over at the OP's house that they are his kids and not hers.

    Doesn't sound like it.

"My two are ten and eight. The ten year old has just started walking to school by himself but this is 400 yards with 2 cul-du-sac type roads to cross and I will walk the eight year old ten mins later so check the ten year old has got there ok."

Fair enough she's got two but that's not to say that those two are his two. Thankfully they weren't there whilst this was happening or the next morning.

Did her guy deserve the slap?

My advice to HIM is to get out as he also doesn't deserve the violence!

As to the handbrake incident - that was dangerous but he was, by then, probably pretty upset with what had gone on before.

So it's ok for him to risk killing her because he was upset but not for her to slap him because she was upset? I think both are wrong but you seem to be justifying him pulling the handbrake, which is very dangerous! You don't risk someone's life because you are upset!

She was manipulating him - she was also violent and actively trying to prevent him from escaping. She's a violent domestic abuser and she needs to be locked up.

Has it ever occured to you she might have tried to stop him from leaving because he could be a danger to himself or others? He could have killed himself, her or other motorists by pulling the handbrake on the car! I do think she should have let him leave and shouldn't have slapped him but that doesn't excuse him throwing furniture or pulling the handbrake on the car.
