I've been through 3 ironing ladies in the last 3 years, and each time I've just put a card in the newsagents - costs 50p! You can normally tell within the first 5 seconds if someone is half-decent or not - I've had loads of potential 'less desireables' calling saying 'Uh. Phonin' 'bout t'job' but have hung on until someone who at least had a basic command of English rang. Doesn't necessarily mean they're any good at cleaning, but I think that if they can at least communicate with you, they're more likely to understand what you want them to do (and hopefully less likely to nick your stuff!). I've always offered totally flexi hours at £6 per hour which attracts stuck-at-home mums who've generally got quite a bit of experience of cleaning/ironing and have often given up quite responsible jobs in the past.

Maybe I've been lucky, as all 3 have been great (current one is quite a good friend now and does some babysitting for us too) but I wouldn't touch an agency - you've no control over who they send then and they charge the earth for it into the bargain! It might not work for you that way, but thought I'd say how I found someone in case it helps!
  • I think we all need a wee treat in our lives. For me its the hairdresser, others its waxing and for you Hypno, its a cleaner. I'm lucky as my mum will tidy the house when it gets really bad. And she loves ironing! And she and my dad are brilliant with their money), so is my sister and brother. Maybe Mum got the wrong baby from the hospital?
PS I had a cleaner years ago when I was married and it was just the best!
  • At the end of the day its your stress level and budget so you dont have to justify yourself to us...having said that I wouldnt have one as I really would want a stranger coming into my house but I dont have kids and it doesent get me down! You'll soon be working F/T so regular money coming in which will take the pressure off. I do think waiting to get one until after you've started f/t work would be a good idea in view of recent posts about the books! Round here they's clear your house before you knew it!!
Duchy SOOO sorry to hear about your friends son. What a devastating loss and such a huge shock for you all. My best friend was killed in a head on collision at the age of 18 (years ago) and its such a loss...so sad for you all. Bug hugs... Say if we can help on any way...

Normally I'd say a cleaner is a luxury few of us can really justify, but in your case I think its different. Yes, it may cost you a bit (not sure, but from the post above I'm reckoning 2 hrs @ £6 = £12 p/week or £50 per month approx) ... BUT ... think how much less stress you will have and how much more productive you can be in those extra 2 hrs each week ... I reckon that you will be able to generate more money in those extra hours per month and therefore be better off AND have a tidy house ;):D:D

Hypno, well done for braving the dentist. I managed to save some money last week by completely forgetting a dental appointment! I'm now scared to ring to rebook in case they make me pay for the missed appointment.

What about just turning up for your appointment at exactly the same time this week? Make sure you argue politely that of course it's today, you put it in your diary etc. Following explanation from receptionist, a convincing look of embarrassment and liberal dose of apologetic 'I'm so silly...' and you're sorted!

Can you tell I've done this before..? :o

Hypno, cleaner makes total sense. I would get one just so that it would make me clean and tidy up before they came round each week. :D

I pay mine £7.50 an hour for 2 hrs (boy, we're all coming out of the closet here ;)). Worth every penny as I honestly don't think I could carry on doing my job without her.

Hypno, can you earn more than £7.50 an hour? I expect you earn well more than that. So, if it means you'll have more time for private clients when you're working full time it is actually money saving to have a cleaner to free up your time (can you see how I got into debt :o). Seriously, cut yourself some slack. Either the cleaning or MSE goes - no contest :D.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

Well, today has flown by and I have achieved precisely.........hmm, well.......

Let's just say NOTHING as that is all I have achieved :o

Off to college soon so going to bung some jacket potatoes in the oven for the kids and they can have them with sausage and cheese.

I have sort of made a decision, after a conversation today with the lovely Pania, who had to sit amongst my chaos that is my home, that if I can fit it into the budget, I need help with my housework.

I am just not cut out to do it. I feel a failure for not being able to do it, and you have heard me say that so many times before, but it makes me feel very inadequate.

If I have a cleaner, however, as I had before, once a week, I am somehow able to keep on top of it a la flylady for the rest of the week.

So.........against all principals of DFW, BUT it will do my stress levels the world of good. If I do this full time job, it will significantly reduce the stress of the debt, because I will know that there is enough money to pay for them, and will significantly reduce the stress of the mess etc.

Don't shoot me all at once :o

Hypno not only am I planning on getting a cleaner but thinking about a laundry service as well! Goddess I HATE being disabled

  • Hypno I am so jealous of this cleaner thing. I am definately going to get one when I have some more money. I hate hate hate spending weekends chasing about trying to clean up and I never get there.

Re the numbness from the dentist. I don't get an injection unless it is going to be a very deep filling and tbh it is great. I always feel lightheaded from the lignocaine and dentist suggested getting them done without being numbed up. I have only been numbed once since then and that was for a root treatment. I would never go back to it as I hate that numb feeling. It;s not sore although you can get the sensation that it will be sore in a minute but so far I've been fine.

Well I've looked at your SOA and after many hours of number crunching it appears you CAN afford one-but only if you switch to Fairtrade coffee.
