He will reduce it to 16 and rightly so!

As you probably know, 16 year old can get married, pay tax, join the military, start a family etc.... they should be allowed to vote!

By allowing 16 year old's to vote is not "fixing the system".

    Lord SVS

It is a bit "fixing the system". No other election has allowed 16 year olds to vote before, and I have never heard a great call to allow 16 year olds to vote in the General Election.

I think people are cynical because it appears like he is changing the universally accepted Election rules purely because it appears there is a strong pro scottish independance vote for ages between 16-18.

Also, although 16 year olds can do many of the things you've listed above. I believe they can't join the army or get married without their parents permission. Therefore they are not considered an adult until they are 18.

You can get married in Scotland at 16 without parental permission.

The SNP have always supported the right for 16 year olds to vote in general elections. A bill has yet to be put before the Scots Parliament.

I think it's fantastic that a lot of 16-18 year old's support Scottish Independence. They obviously care a lot about their country!

I have always believed that 16 year old's should be allowed to vote. I know if I was paying tax towards a government, but couldn't vote to get a party in or out, I'd be most annoyed!

    Lord SVS

Yes in principle I have no problem with 16 year olds voting. I just find is suspicious that for such a big election they are trying to change the recognized voting rules by including a demographic that is very pro independance. It makes the vote more controversial than it should be.

I suspect that there is a feeling that younger voters don't think through the impact of such a big decision and are more likely to be swayed by nationalistic rhetoric.

Whatever the outcome it should be an interesting vote. Whatever the outcome some people are going to be annoyed!

You highlighted the profit the crown estate made and said why don't the royal family pay for the jubilee themselves. As the royal family don't get the profit it was a flawed argument.

My argument was that the Royal Family has an abundance of wealth by virtue of birth - they do quite well out of their position and my suggestion was that they should offer to contribute towards any celebrations made on their behalf.

I have to laugh at the current campaign for the public to contribute towards a new Royal Yacht - now that is a step to far - particular when many families are curently struggling to keep a roof over their heads.

I was told when I was a kid that if you want something, you work hard and save for it - I was never born into wealth, but that advice stood me in good stead and I haven't done too badly.

I'm sure that if the Queen really wanted a new yacht, she has the resources to buy one.

I feel a 'look how much income the royal yacht Britannia earned' argument coming on! And that argument is as stupid as the one that suggests the royal family are an asset to this country. And no doubt selective quotes and links will be forthcoming to supplement those who disagree with my views.

They are an anachronism and are far too high maintenance.

I also see you edited your comment after I posted to make them less ridiculous.

'Ridicuous' insomuch they don't conform tou your obvious royalist views?

I actually edited after I posted to clarify that I was aware that all revenues from Crown estates does not go directly to the royal family as I anticipated (correctly) that someone would pick up on that. Your responding post did not actually show when mine was visible immediately after submitting.

What you failed to add however, was that if the monarchy ceased to exist tomorrow - the revenues generated from Crown estates would still go towards financing the administration for this country anyway!

Once Scotland is independent, there won't be much of a 'United' Kingdom to reign over and taking into consideration the shrinking of the Commonwealth over the years as well, hopefully, in years to come, probably after the current Queen has long gone, attitudes will change and we will get rid of the monarchy as many believe it is expensive relic from past days.

The prospect of Clown Prince Charlie ever becoming King is frightening - enough to make you want to put your own toothpaste on your own brush!

Looks like the tower beckons for me then!

So using that argument, they will bring down the age for purchasing alcohol as well? I don't think so.

The reality is that it is a cynical ploy to include that age group as they know they can be (and have been) influenced by the likes of Salmond and their views.

To be honest I hope that Scotland does gain independance - so long that independance is total and not a hybrid.

In America they have flags up all the time, in England we only put flags up when there`s a big event on. Personally I think it looks really chavvy.
Is there anyway your neighbour`s flag could dissapear? Maybe at night, perhaps a bird flew off with it

Also you say he is "awkward" however it is you that is complaining about the countrys flag being flown at a time of national celebration. I would argue you were the one being awkward!

Agree wholeheartedly. Take it in the spirit in which it was intended.

And birds should be able to survive on what's in the garden at this time of year.

Simply try & embrace the Jubilee.

Sounds like a simple case of Nimbyism.

Unfortunately people are wrongly scorned for being patriotic, or are considered racist/bigotted simply for displaying a Union flag. I've got a british car with a union jack logo on the bonnet and I've been accused of being a BNP supporter and other such rubbish.

Patriotism should be encouraged, not hindered. be proud that your neighbour is not scared off by politically correct nonsense and interference and embrace the celebrations of the Jubilee with him.

My husband's motorbike has a Union Jack on it too, it is British. :)

OP, politely mention your concerns about the birds to your neighour and ask if he can put the flag elsewhere. If he says no, put up with it till the end of the National Celebrations.

It will indeed be an interesting vote. I just hope 16-17 year old's make a informed decision and vote for independence!

    Lord SVS

I'd be surprised if many can even spell independence, let alone vote for it!

Maybe they should run it as a manufactured, flashy, vote by text campaign like Big Brother/Xfactor/Celebrity Jungle Dancing on Ice/generic TV fodder show, then the yoof ov today mebbe intrstd innit. Innit.
