So you do taxi enforcement but don't know if a tyre is illegal or not.

Are you sure you're the right person to be doing that job?

I also wondered the same thing?

back to your tyre though, it looks ok to me,as it isnt bulging , there are lots of scaremongers on here, having said that if you have any doubts,,, for the sake of £70 ish !!

I don't do the mechanical inspections. They are done by someone who is qualified (vosa or an MOT tester and on random stop checks the police check tyres because they can issue fixed penalties or take a vehicle off the road which I don't have power to do). I deal with breaches of licence conditions and investigating criminal offences. A mechanic wouldn't be qualified to do my job and I wouldn't pretend to be able to do theirs!
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

That's fair enough. You've had various opinions on here, why not get another from one of the mechanical inspectors?
Also decide which is more important to you, the legal or safety aspect (your OP did suggest the latter), and let that influence your final decision.

There is no legal or safety aspect.
With no bulges, cuts to the cords, or any other strutcural damage to the tyre, that tyre is both safe and legal.
Continue to get your moneys worth out of it.

This wheel would become my spare wheel. I would be happy to use it as a spare, as spares in general are only used for a few days.

Then i would have it swapped out next time i had a pair of tyres changed.

Can't see a problem with that. As long as it doesn't start to bulge (will happen quite quickly if it's going to) it'll be fine.

The strength of the sidewall is in the fabric plies, not the rubber, and the outer rubber is basically there to protect them, which in this case it's done exactly as intended.

That's why cuts that expose the cord are illegal - they don't weaken the tyre in themselves but they expose the cords to water / atmosphere / further damage and it's when the cords fal that you have a problem.

^This - most sensible advice on this thread - the cords hold the structure together but the rubber doesn't do much for structural integrity.

Just keep an eye on it for a bit and look for bulges.

To continue to drive with a tyre like that is irresponsible. Drive to the nearest tyre place and get it sorted. You're not only putting yourself (and whoever else in the car), in danger, but you're also putting me and my family in danger.

If the police were to stop you and check the tyres, you would be handed a £60 fine and 3 points. It's not worth it. Get a cheap £40 tyre fitted and everyone will be happy.

That is a presumption it is unwise to make.

goes contrary to your views beforehand....such a tyre may well prove not to have the amount of grip under certain conditions that might be expected by the owner...[given that they've managed to take a small chunk out of the rubber anyway].......described by some on here as 'chinese ditch-finders?'

There is, apparently from the picture, nothing illegal about that tyre, and is typical of the sort of tyre damage I personally have to use daily, with Her Majesty's Finest!

The only person putting you and your family in danger on the roads....is the person behind your steering wheel.
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

My recommendation to get a cheap £40 tyre is a sensible recommendation. There are a number of VERY good cheap tyres out there. I use £40 tyres on my company vans. They are Dunlop (I only buy Scottish) and they last around 20,000 miles.

The police around here are very strict on these things. The wheel is damaged, it needs replaced. I know if one of my company vans were in an accident, and a tyre was found out to be like that, my backside would be sued, even if I do have the best lawyers in the land.

Except there is nothing wrong with the tyre and is legal. As I said so many scaremomgers on here

£40 tyres are not worth fitting IMO
