Getting a signature doesn't always help. A company I work for used to send cheques by recorded delivery to a central processing place for the Bank of Scotland (they don't have any branches in England so I don't know why they started with them). The cheques were lost though signed for by a squiggle with the name "Tweed" entered under the signature (which is the name of the building, not a person). The company had too many employees for the ombudsman service (but were well under the limit for turnover) and finally settled some 8 months later I think for about half of what they'd lost (they were small dominination amounts that it was never going to be practical to get back from the customers).

Unlike the original poster though I'm lucky to have a really good Post Office locally that are very helpful (and very busy as a result). Why doesn't everyone run a business like that?

Have you considered recording your transaction on your phone so that you can get proof you are asking for second, being charged first and no good reason as to why? That would at least give you enough evidence to go to the local press and whoever give the Post Offices their licences if he still refused to pay back the difference.

Well I have been thinking about recording the transaction but it is too much hassle, I used to record my tennats and I recorded them when they were deliberty abusing my property.....That proof got them kicked out when i took them to court....

Recording it is time consuming. I use DHL for sending large parcels and never had a problem with them. For that reason I will be moving to a different postal service for the rest of my items which need to be posted.

I have made a facebook fan page of how crap Royal mail/post offices are and I shall be taking mug shots of the counter staff the next time I am there.......that is if I ever go back....

Post office/royal mail have just overcharged me too. I wanted to post large letters weighing ~150g, but the counter insisted a large letter over 100g is a packet so is £2.20 and foolishly I accepted this as maybe I understood the new prices wrong. Surely the manager wouldn't be wrong? I called the post office and they say their prices are totally different to RM (errr?!) and over 100g is a £1.72 packet and that a second class stamp is 36p?!!! Complaint made, wonder what will come of it.

The person you spoke to is incorrect. 0-750 packet is £2.70, there is no £1.72 packet price, and a second class stamp is 50p.

A large letter can only be 25mm deep, but can weigh up to 750g, it's only when you go over 25mm or 750g that it becomes a packet, 100g is the limit for a letter, not large letter. Seems they have no idea what the price structure is.

There's a handy chart on RM, take it with you next time you go!

Hello everyone.

New member but longtime lurker of this forum.

I am not sure if this is the correct place in which to describe my awful experiences with Royal Mail, which I have been having to deal with quite a lot recently.

Well, I have a eBay and Amazon business and I use royal mail to send small parcels.

I usually send packets via Royal Mail 2nd Class Recorded and today asked for royal mail 2nd class recorded. It also stated on all four parcels in bold 2nd class recorded but the counter staff deliberty sent them by Royal mail 1st class recorded and has done so in the past. I have over looked them but now I am furious.

When I found out at the counter he refused to change it to 2nd class recorded and did not refund me my difference.

What can I do ?

I would like to take this further, I have phoned Royal mail customer service and they are even worse. I have been put through 6 different departments and still nothing. I have also emailed allan.leighton@royalmail.com

On top of all that, whatever parcels which I have received from other traders which I deal with, they have all come crushed and some come lost even "recorded" delivery ones.

To be honest we should all stop using Royal Fail, their price increase have also blown many people away.

This is an old post but hte problems continue at post office counters. Over the past 3 months I have requested the cheaper option on posting ( I am an Ebayer): on 4 occassions I was presented with a bill which, upon probing, was tfor 1st class mail. On one occassion, I asked infront of a crowded post office, if Royal Mail had a postive policy of charging the higher charge....there was a very uneasy atmosphere behinfd the counter....I am concerned that elderly people or less informed customers may not feel able to tackle staff...I do not intend to leave this matter here.

I can only echo the advice given further up the thread.

Get the current prices leaflet/PDF. Measure and accurately weigh BEFORE you leave the house. Write the service, the weight and expected price on the packet.

When you have to deal with P.O. Counters: Clearly state the service, LOOK AT the weight on their scales, if it does not correspond to yours, find out why! Check the price they give you, be prepared to say NO, that's not the right service, it should be £x.xx.

This level of paranoia shouldn't be necessary. But if you've dealt with them enough (eBayer?), you'll know it is...

• Scales that already read a weight before you put the item on, coupled with a refusal to zero them out -- just repeated requests to "put the item on the scales" "You have to put item on the scales so we can weigh it"
• Attempted bump from 2nd to 1st class "accidentally" here too ...
• Refusal to provide certificates of posting because "we don't do those any more" -- just a bland receipt saying "1 x item 150g" "1 x item 175g" etc. which is no use for eBay/PayPal proof (no address details), yet at another time c.o.p produced.
