With books that you have bought to read and are then selling on you dont pay tax, but is it better to include them in your calculations so they balance off the profit a bit ? (does that make sense??) or is this a big cheating no-no ?

I have a similar wonder in that I'm still mostly selling my own books from Uni and ones I've had for ages and haven't been includiing them in my records as presumably I've already paid all the necessary on them..... Any thoughts anyone?

I think the best way to work out what you should do is to put yourself in the position of being scrutinised by the Taxman.
Could you happily prove to him (or her) that you are only selling your own books.
So, for instance if you read law at uni but were selling books on English Lit then he might have difficulty believing you.
If you have a few thousand listed (like me) then would he believe they were all your own books???
Sometimes I sell a game or book for DD or DS, inwhich case I deduct the money from my Amazon payment but keep a record of the game/book in my little book and have their initials in the SKU to help me remember.
I think most of us know what we should do and we know when we feel we are doing the right thing.

i agree, i think you should cover all bases and let the taxman tell you if there is too much info rather than not enough, it will look better on you if they see you are not trying to hide anything, that is what i think anyway (maybe wrong not much experience), not that it looks as if i have to worry as i am definitely getting better at this:rotfl:
january challenge 10 books........sold 6 books

I'm coming to the end of my third month of half price pro seller and am not sure what to do. I only sold 28 books last month and am only on 20 so far this month so it really isn't worth me staying on the programme once I have to pay full price. I've only sold 2 books this week on Amazon. Trouble is if I give up pro status I will have to reprice all 900 books I have listed as many rely on that extra 83p (or whatever) saving to make a profit, espeically after the postage hikes tomorrow. I really really don't want to have to recheck all my listings.
I've never had so many books listed, and never had such bad sales. I'm only grateful that my ebay sales are increasing all the time and even my greenmetroplis sales are beginning to do well. One book in particular was on Amazon for 25p, yet within hours of listing it on ebay at 99p I started to get bids, and now 3 days later, with 6 still to go it is well over £3. I have no idea why, I've obviously missed something as I also have 9 people watching itIt was only 10p from a junk shop as well in a bargain bin and I bought it to read on the train to work.

Im also at the end of the pro seller 'sale' and im not going to re-new, even though sales are creeping back up.
I need some pricing help, im not usually indecisive but i bought these few books today and found a couple of gems,
ISBN 0340716878
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Good-Death-Elizabeth-Ironside/dp/0340716878/ref=sr_11_1/026-9240754-2842854?ie=UTF8&qid=1175527552&sr=11-1
and this one , which is brand new
ISBN 190510829x
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Laughing-Star-Story-Tough-Love/dp/190510829X/ref=sr_11_1/026-9240754-2842854?ie=UTF8&qid=1175527783&sr=11-1
I found them both at a charity shop and after spending £2.50 for these and 3 others they seem to be coming back around the £70-£80 mark so very nice little profit. Im just sceptical of pricing the elizabeth ironside that high as i cant really see it selling.

Clyde Coast Books is one of the regulars on the Amazon Discussion board and it looks as if their copy has been listed since 8th Feb (probably this year, but maybe not).
I would price match at £48 and see how you go, I couldn't find a cheaper copy elsewhere on the internet. It does depend how much a book is sought after and I have sold others for similar amounts, such as In God's Name by David Yallop - this is now a penny book and has been republished which would have killed its 2nd hand prices anyway.
Good luck

I've just had some one email me that their cd had arrived and thanking me but they haven't left feedback."And suddenly I find myself listening to a man I've never known before,Telling me about the sea..."0

Yay I sold something :j Haven't sold anything for weeks now, though I only have 25 books or so, so not really on the level of a lot of you experts
I also have a lot of antique books and a rare sci fi comic book which I don't know what to do with. I went to a book seller near here and he was so rude I couldn't bring myself to do business with him. That man is richest whose pleasures are cheapest. Henry David Thoreau0
