Aid programmes in Athens, not Africa, to feed the poor
Didn't we have a thread on here last week about the increase in the number of 'soup kitchens' that are popping up in the Uk to feed the poor here.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

Yes, but that's insignificant by comparison.
Watch the programme on iplayer.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

I was actually surprised by how shockingly widespread the poverty is. Not what you expect for a European country in 2012.
Perhaps it's because I'd started to half-believe some of the nonsense on here about the cuts not being that bad.... But it was worse than I expected.
Are they paying their taxes now?
Went a few years ago and nobody would accept anything but cash.0 -

This is why we need to stop bailing out, let forces work, and build up from there.
There is no way out of poverty for these people until the whole thing is sorted. The pain will go on a lot longer by extending and pretending.0 -
I watched it live. I was shocked, not just at the lines of people waiting to be fed but at the state of what you think of as a beautiful city. The desolate old Olympic village which is still getting paid for, and yet when asked to choose people still wanted the euro.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

The people Portillo spoke to about the tax readily agreed that taxes had not paid, but said it was only to be competitive with others who didn't pay their taxes.
They didn't want to return to the drachma because "It would be going backwards" and would involve a return to high interest rates.
Also, Portillo made the point that lots of German cars had been sold, he highlighted Porsche. People, during the good times, weren't saving, weren't paying taxes and now have a problem.
Despite this, I do feel for them, but they still don't seem to be getting it.
Did anyone notice the car factory in Germany where all the workers were wearing the same jolly red dungarees? I can just see that happening in the UK....

So the reasons they are in a mess are of no consequence?0 -

Sorry Graham, I can't quite believe what you're suggesting.
You want to make a terrible situation much, much, much worse, because then you might get some growth.
But even with that growth they'll still be worse off than today for maybe a decade or more.
Just so we're clear, why exactly is that better?
How do you fix a poverty crisis by impoverishing more people?“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

So the reasons they are in a mess are of no consequence?
Funnily enough, one of the biggest reasons they're in such a mess is Germany. It was Germany who profited most on the debt of the peripheral states. Germany would not have been able to rebuild post-unification without the artificial benefits of a one way currency flow from the southern Europeans.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”
