Your attitudes in this thread are symptomatic of the problem. If there is no collective sharing of information and mutual purpose that rises above arrogant self interest, nothing will ever be achieved.
There has been collective sharing of information, you've just joined in 5 years too late because it has only just started to affect you, so your "arrogant self interest" was alerted to it.

    Arguing both sides now.
Nothing could have been done in the past - but now we can? On a forum?
The only one being abusive here is you. Which is, I believe, your only recreation.

Having read some of your previous posts macfly, I feel that is indeed the pot calling the kettle black. I believe that you need to realise that there is nothing special about you and that a patronising manner will not always work in your favour. It doesn't take much of a mathmatician to work out whose lives are dominated by forum posting.

    Indeed.
If you never look at what is happening that is not in your own "arrogant self interest, nothing will ever be achieved."

I appreciate that fuel costs have risen substantially but when was the VAT position on postal services changed. as far as I was aware these have always been exempt from VAT?

The item you posted was a packet. These, and many other Royal Mail products, have been subject to VAT since 2/4/2012.

Actually I have been paying VAT on some services since 2011......
Changes to VAT rules and the way in which our products are regulated have affected the VAT status of a number of our products. A limited range of our products became subject to VAT through 2011, and this has been extended to other business products from 2 April 2012.

Jeez, what an argument. To pay just 60p to have something sent from one end of the country to the next is in my opinion bloody good value. Especially as it is normally there the next day.

We had to send a last minute document at work using a courier as we missed last post. £492. Somehow the meagre 60p seems like a great price.

RFW - what effort, apart from pointless sarcasm, have you put in to change the Royal Mail situation? Come to that what have any of you actually done or said that has made a jot of difference? Telling me that I should have got involved years ago, presumably with your forum specialist subject, assuming that I haven't, is unhelpful.

This thread also seems to have attracted a number of posters who, given their position, are happy to pay the extra money for the Royal Mail Service. This is not about you or me. If the Royal Mail is privatised and mail delivery is priced at market rates, older and poorer people, perhaps with no internet access, phone, etc will pay the price. Post offices shutting down, loss of services, etc, over recent years has already taken value away from a more costly service.

Paying for standard (1st/2nd) class packets over the counter at the PO does not attract any VAT.

You seem to have read a mythical post of mine where I said I was inclined to do anything or that I was even bothered by the change.

I don't actually believe that RM's prices are too high on standard domestic services nor that they will have any massive impact on the less well off and unfortunately there is still probably room for increases.

On a personal level, I'm a moderately high business user and after a little manouevring the recent changes haven't been that excessive.

You have had several posts where you have been abusive or sarcastic to others who have pointed out where you are wrong. I managed to deduce from your poorly informed posts that you haven't done anything to voice your concerns, if you had you may well have educated yourself to the recent history of Royal Mail.

I'm sure, though, that when you have looked into it some more and have then written to your MP and formed a strategy to start your crusade you will then get support on here. If you can formulate a system that will work successfully, have a happy and sustainable workforce, be financially viable and have lower prices for the consumer, I would be happy to support you.
