Hi NoodleDoodle, You may already know about the National Market Traders Federation but I think their website is very informative and it even has a video of an expert doing a 'makeover' for a sweetie stall about half way down this page:

Hope this helps and good luck.

I was on a thread the other day talking about curries, so dinner went out the window that night and we had a takeaway curry, same with this thread too, off to the cinema tomorrow so it will be a nice bag of pick and mix for me.

To the person asking about wham bars - approved food have them, for a silly low price too.

It sounds brilliant, I say go for it..

We were in cash and carry yesterday and spent ages down the sweetie aisle all of them taking us back to our childhood, there are so many to choose from.

You could do little bags of sweets but there is nothing stopping you having a shelf at the back with lots of jars for you to serve from. There is a website that sells sweets that might help with some ideas of what to sell.

What would make you buy from me

Branding/original manufacturers. I would not buy cheap imitation sweets, which is all I have ever seen at markets. Clear cellophane bags would put me off. This is one area where I want to see some stylish packaging design. :o

    Oooh, sugar mice.

I saw a shop in Lincoln once that did theme boxes, so they had sweets from the 50s or 60s etc. They were stupidly overpriced though, but someone must have been buying them!

I don't know whether to be glad or annoyed that tomorrow's sunday so I can't go to the market for sweets...
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

Absolutely overwhelmed by all the responses. Thank you all for taking the time to reply.

We have looked into joining the National Federation of Market Traders which is around £90 a year and includes the insurance we need to trade. Weekly pitch at the local market is £15.

We have £500 saved so that should cover the insurance and start up stock. Only thing that seems expensive is the scales - coming in at over £100.

My uncle is going to confirm with the market committee as to whether they will release a casual pitch (subject to no objections from the other traders). But as there is no competition this isn't likely to be a problem. Going to work out a beginers stock list tomorrow so all systems go!
