Opinions wanted....

My husband has recently been made redundant and we are considering opening a market stall selling sweets in our local town.
The market operates on a Saturday and there are currently no other stalls selling sweets/ confectionery.
This would also give us the opportunity to branch out to other markets.

I have experience of market selling in that many of my family members are market traders albeit not in selling sweets.

What I am wondering is if you were in your local market would a sweet stall interest you and what sort of products would you like to see stocked/ buy?

We are reckoning on about £500 start up for stock and insurance - we can borrow a stall until we get on our feet.

Is it worth a punt? I am excited at the idea but also nervous as money is tight at the minute and although my hb has applied for lots of jobs over the past few weeks nothing seems to be coming off or in the pipeline - so is it worth trying to go self employed?

Thanks in advance for your opinions :)

Just don't let people pick their sweets themselves. You won't know where their hands have been _pale_

And don't leave the lids off the tubs ready to catch their sneezes _pale_

Faith is the denial of observation, so that belief can be preserved.

There is a stall in my town that does this. The sweets are all packaged in clear bags and the bags are all £1 each. They have so many varieties on sale (kids stuff, retro stuff as well as mints etc). I have never seen loads of people buying, but the stall has been there for a couple of years now so I assume they sell enough to make it worth it.

What about also offering a child's goody bag as well? I seem to remember being able to buy one and in it there was some sweets and a little toy ?

Also what about offering to do wedding packages as well? (I know I said I can't see the point of them -and tbh I still can't - but if there's a market for them.......)

Oh and forgot to add according to Lord Alan this week you can make a fortune just by having a market stall.- all you need is a stall, stock and the most important thing a tv camera crew

  • Do it!

I wish I did not read this post now, because I have been pondering for the past 6+ hours to go to the shop and buy £10 worth of sweets, but I cannot be bothered to come out of the warm house!! LOL

If you did a courier service, you would be quids in! LOL

Thanks for your suggestions - we are considering wedding sweet tables and kids style party bags as an add-on if we can get it off and running. However, like you, I struggle to see the point in the wedding packages. But if they were to take off I could be easily persuaded :rotfl:
