We have a little sweet shop in our town, big jars, my kids love gummi bears, jelly snakes, dolly mixtures, they also do chews etc which you pick yourself. It has been there a fair few years, so they obviously make money. 50gms - 75p. It gets a bit less with larger amounts.

What would make me buy - I would want you to be clean and tidy, I can't abide any food seller who looks a bit rough, unshaven, unkempt (I am sure you are already clean and tidy of course). White aprons, or coveralls etc. Look as professional as possible. Display the sweets in what you would think are types, so kiddies bags, gums - wine/american hard gums etc/toffee's so they are not just random across the stall. Maybe try to get some candy floss buckets that you could hang up so people in the distance (kids) see them and start nagging their parents.

I think it's a great idea, especially if you have no competition.

    pear drops are my fave!

another vote for asking the small business forum but also, do keep us updated on here so we can live through you :)

    all the best x

p.s. are there any local colleges who can do graphic design free? I'm a dancer and designed a free website using moonfruit which was a great platform for advertising and making yourself more professional - can cheaply buy domain names to go with logos. If it is going to be your husbands baby if you are working full time then some sort of play on his name and olde worlde things? Android phones and iphones have great apps for taking old fashioned pics with coffee staining etc for the website. Very exciting!

Some brilliant ideas and positive comments guys - thanks.

So - I am thinking that the pre-packed and ready bagged sweets are the best route.

So now I need ideas on display - names etc - and what sort of prices would you expect to pay for 1/4 of sweets - bars etc.

What would make you buy from me - and what sort of deals would interest you (if any!)

Personally a "3 bags for £X" would entice me! It would make me feel less guilty for wanting to buy so many bags of sweeties!

I took DD to an old sweetie shop on thursday and it was mostly £1.10 for 100g of the sort of sweets you are asking.

I like mixed bags of stuff. I think £1 is a nice number but maybe you could also do some smaller bags for 50p or something.

DD had some of these - sooo nice

We just started a new business and used n33ddsigns.com for our logo and website. We're thrilled with them.

Our local sweet stall is 99p for 100g. The penny always goes in their charity jar! They are in a prime location at the car park machines as you leave the shopping centre so people get sweets to get change to pay for their parking.

I love Bon bons (purple are best) my children love millions.

They have them in the big jars and do for you as you order.

I would like to see smaller bags for toddlers, I will 90% of the time walk straight past if they are all big bags when all i want is a few sweets to keep DD quiet for 10 minutes :D

The other thing is, have the bags marked that are Gluten Free/suitable for coeliacs. My DS is coeliac and our sweet stall have nothing marked up for allergies other than peanuts :( We always get the blank look when we ask and then the 10 minute wait while they check all the boxes :(

Sounds like a really good idea :)

Like others have said, smart looking "uniforms" and 3 for £x type offers would be good.

Don't forget to sell those little milk chocolate hammers and saws, I used to love those as a kid :
