  • I was overcharged in January 2007 by Abbey for closing my Mortgage and moving to Britannia. ( By the way i was told by Abbey after being with them for 11 years and never missing a payment that they did not want my business and would not offer me a new discounted rate as my mortgage was under £50k and it was not viable for them to keep me).
They charged me £225.00 exit fee. After following Martins advice to the letter, yesterday i received a cheque for £126.00. How smug do i feel after the way they treated me.
    Thanks Martin...
  • Just to say thanks. I moved my mortgage from RBS earlier this year. I posted a letter to them last Monday 17 September and £150 was refunded to my account by Friday 21 November. Obviously the banks are making lots of money from people who are struggling to save money. Well done Martin for bringing this to ordinary folks' attention.:T
  • can anyone help me ? i rung abbey on 19Th sept and asked if I've been overcharged on my mortgage fee they said yes and said they were really sorry and they would send my a cheque for £126 in 3-5 working days i said thank you very much. On the 26Th a week later nothing, had they got the right address ?? rang again said i was still waiting for my cheque. He then told me its not the way they do things i would need to fill a form in and i was charged the right amount of £225 in April of this year so really i was not due any thing just waiting for the form anybody got any ideas what to do next????????
  • The Abbey address has an incorrect PO Box - not your fault as they have it incorrect on their form and thereby lost my first attempt to reclaim. It should be:
    PO Box 286
    NOT 287.

Am on my third letter as they don't seem that keen to repay, but am plugging away!
  • Read one of the entries on getting £225 back from Abbey. It sounds u had similar dates to me. I took out a 2 year variable tracker in Sept 2003 and then switched it in Sept 2005 when I was obviously charged £225. I have not bothered pursuing yet as the 'charges brochure' which came with the mortgage states this fee. Did you get the money because it was not actually stated on the mortgage contract?
  • A contact number was requested earlier in this thread: it is 08456 094343.

Just for the record, I contacted them - after negotiating the usual awful call routing nightmare, I was dealt with by an extremely helpful and pleasant lady who looked up my original records quickly, confirmed that I had been charged £50, which was what had been specified in my original contract, and that in fact no £40 deed release fee had been charged, which had also been so specified (and therefore would have been payable).

Simple, fast, helpful - commendable service from IF.
  • I have just redeemed my mortgage with Abbey National and have been charged £225 redemption fee.
Obviously 25 years ago, I cannot remember what they said the fee was but, as your table shows it only £50 10 ten years ago.
I have felt pressured into paying this to stop them adding interest to the account!
Needless to say they will be getting a letter from me!

  • You do know that lenders have just put this fee in other places, like admin fees and rate!

  • Not Abbey! The letter I received clearly stated the accrued interest since my last payment and a fee of £225 chargeable on redemption.

Anyway, the letter has gone off, let's see what excuses they can think up!

  • I have just receive a £100.00 cheque from Halifax for a mortgage that finished 4 years ago & a £30.00 cheque from Abbey for my mortgage that was swapped 5 1/2 years ago. I just sent off the template letter & received a letter from the Halifax asking me to sign & return, which I did. I then received the cheque. The Abbey asked me for more details, eg: start dates, finish dates. I supplied them & bosch, a £30.00 cheque.
    Well worth the effort.
