sarab66 wrote:Yes, I've bucked the trend. Last Autumn I was looking to save costs and realised I'd be better off combining packages (NTL=broadband & telephone, Sky=tv) and called Sky, they reduced my package for 6 months by 50% to try and keep me.
I'd been keeping an eye on the new potential deals once NTL became Virgin Media but am also really bored with the Murdoch media empire controlling what I can/can't see and the political opinion. Also whilst I'd been a big Lost fan was hacked off when it went to Sky One as the showtimes didn't fit in with me so I'd missed a few episodes (video not working and can't justify the extra expense for a DVD Rec or Sky/Virgin+) and that was all I watched on the Sky channels as I watch BBC News 24.
However, whilst Virgin is fighting and negotiating on price and has been playing hardball with Sky I believe they are challenging the potential monopoly that Sky had in dominating how much we will all have to pay for cable/satellite services. I like what it is going on because in the long-term so long as Virgin/Branson keep negotiating hardball style it can only better us, the consumer with lower prices. It's not just the short-term loss.
Congrats to the people who've negotiated better deals with Virgin as you could have longer term benefits in longer-term price wars.
In summary, I had great pleasure on 'blackout' day in calling Sky to cancel my subscription and saying it was because I didn't want to support the Murdoch empire any longer and was switching my allegiance to branson. I then called Virgin and made one of the customer operatives very happy as he'd been having nightmare calls from irate customers all morning. Was I the only person to call up and take new services that day? And the key thing is I've saved myself £11.50 per month which I can now transfer to my credit card payments!:rotfl:
In total agreement. VM offers more free to view TV series and is even outclassing the BBC. They may not be the present series but they offer an alternative not offered before.
Credit where it's due. What have we really Lost? Sky mucked about with the schedule I was missing episodes anyway. So whether Murdoch serves or bullies, customers should put their foot down.0 -
I`ve have had telewest phone & broadband for 5 years, have had their tv for 9 months.
I rung and complained they swapped my phone from free evenings/weekends to free all the time, lower rate mobile and international calls, change my broardband from 2mb to 10mb, as I already have the top tv package they reduced the cost by £5.00 and gave me free front row films for 6 months.
I then spoke to the customer relations dept who reduced my monthly bill by a further £10.00 for the next 3 months.
Quite a result I thought.

It also now states that there is a 6p conection charge and a 5p per minute cost. It is a bit unclear if this applies to the 150 number (which probably does) so be wary about these long periods of being on hold.
Some of the pre-existing Virgin customers aren't cable phone customers so don't have a 150 phoneline (they used ADSL broadband through a BT line)..the other number is for them i think.
Also, for Virgin mobile customers who can't dial 150 either.
150 is free from cable phone.0 -
Before I even thought about trying to get a better package on the back of the Sky debacle moved on to the 2 for £20 offer:
Large Broadband - 4mb (No extra charge)
Large TV
I was reasonably happy with that but might chance my arm again.
Maybe trying to get 'V+' cheaper or even free.
Plus I have an extra V box that for some reason they sent me when I upgraded to Large TV, might try and get that installed in the bedroom.
Will let you know how I get on................0 -

Have you told them you're cancelling so they can cut your service off so you won't owe them any more money?
They'll probably chase you for the money for a while, then blacklist you from Virgin products and maybe make a note on your credit rating.
You also get charged more if you don't pay through DD.0
