Clearly if they are speeding they are not driving safely.

Ok, I'm on your local council and I replace the (presumably) 30mph limit on the road outside your house with a 20 limit. Do you now accept that you've been driving unsafely for the last however many years you lived there?

    What utter claptrap!

Your attitude towards speeding is pretty appalling bearing in mind the kind of vehicles you drive.

Driving at 20mph is always going to be more safe than driving at 30mph.

Speed limits are often nothing more than an arbitrary number and used for nothing other than revenue collection.

While I agree they have their place in danger areas, they have no place on the open road.

But is 30 'unsafe' in this context?

Actually it's not that simple. Nothing about road safety is ever simple.

Driving too slow causes distraction, boredom and tiredness. Those lead to observation failures. Observation failures lead to accidents.

The only area where it is actually that simple is that the lower speed reduces the severity of an accident that happens to arise. So maybe the pedestrian will only have 3 broken bones instead of 5.

I firmly believe that reducing the number of accidents, by targetting crap driving, should be a greater priority than attempting to reduce the severity of the accidents caused by crap drivers, especially when the efforts to reduce the severity have a negative effect on the number of accidents.

If the speed limit has been dropped to 20 because someone has done a new risk assesment then clearly 30 would have been considered unsafe.

So you'd willingly accept that you'd been driving dangerously for the last however long you'd lived there?

If so, why didn't you notice before?

or alternatively, what if there was no risk assessment, and it was just to appease a couple of NIMBYs down the road?

I see terrible driving daily - not just little 'slips' but wilful, wanton, dangerous driving. I would like to see more unmarked police cars on the roads to catch these people but of course it's far easier (and more productive) to slap a Gatso by the road.;)

If the speed limit is 20 then it's not going to be an area that's going to cause boredom or tiredness.

Are you saying that we shouldn't try to reduce severity remember that the reduced speed maybe be difference between 5 broken bones and death.

I agree with you that much more of an effort should be made to reduce crap driving but unfortunately there's always going to be someone who thinks doing 30 in a 20 is perfectly ok.
