Sounds liek this is a serial offender. Doing an indicated 70 in a 50mph limit is just daft.
There you go again with your nonsense about speedo accuracy. The last three cars I have owned would be doing a true 67-68mph when the speedo indicated 70. Same with the last few motorcycles I have owned too. Whilst the regulations allow for a maximum over read of 10% + 2.5mph it is unusual now for a modern vehicle to have a speedo that is over reading by that amount."You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"

It is possible for a speedo to read 70 while doing 61. They are legally allowed to overread by up to 10%+6.25 mph.. from the factory, and they are never tested at MOT.
However to assume that all speedos overread by that much is wrong.
The cynic in me would suggest that some manufacturers aim for 5%+3.125 mph so that they can be a little bit loose with tolerances and still get lots of working speedo, but I have no evidence to back this up.0 -
GPS is flat earth measuring and is not accurate, even aircraft dont use it to measure actual speed.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

GPS is as close as most people are going to get in a car, providing you are sure to do the comparison on a flat, straight road at a constant speed.
I agree that relying on it as a speedo replacement is a bad idea, but it's fine to use it to work out your speedo inaccuracy when the situations described above arise.0 -
Nope and act of stupidity that essentially asks plod to have their trousers down and not even pass them the lurpak.
Sounds liek this is a serial offender. Doing an indicated 70 in a 50mph limit is just daft. They might have got away with it this time but do you want to be the copper telling someone's family they've been killed because someone:
a. never learnt their lesson
b. wanted to be somewhere 30 seconds quicker than they would have been
c. never got told to slow down because it's "a victimless crime"
I don't mind people going a bit quicker int he right places, I'm all for the move to 80mph on the motorway but if someone is prepared to break the limit this often and by that much then they deserve to be punished before there is a victim.
You can't close the stable door etc....
5t.
Emotive judgemental nonsense that does no credit to the usual helpful people on MSE.
You don't know the road or conditions.
You don't know the driver.
You don't know the vehicle.
In fact you don't know anything about that paticular incident. The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0 -

Most speedos seem to be pretty accurate these days. Unlike the over optimistic mpg figures quoted in sales brochures."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Very true, we are all guilty of judging but every case is different. He shouldn't have got some of the points.I am pleased to see you did not take offence at my joke :A
Oh I did for a split second!
Nonsense, the speedo would have to be way out for it to be over reading by that much.
It's a new car, it shouldn't be out at all should it?I can't be bothered updating this anymore0
