But it would still be good to hear from someone without CPS who can tell us what really happens if they use the 1280 prefix.

I can and the answer is - nothing! The call is routed via BT as expected.

I use Virgin Cable for broadband TV and phone. I am wondering has someone used the Orchid to reduce the calling costs on Virgin. I manually use 18866 or 18185 for international calls using a freephone number but don't use any of these for national calls. Most of my bill relates to mobiles and non-geographic numbers.

There are plenty who do - and it's a very sensible way of 'transparently' cutting VM's high call charges.

I'd suggest you DO consider using an Orchid and 18185, 18866 or 1899's freephone gateway numbers to reduce the cost of your geographical calls too.

I thought Virgin blocked the use of some CPS numbers.

I have made a couple of calls to Canada recently, I was most surprised the cost was less than if I called my next door neighboor using BT.

You mean indirect access numbers (CPS is only available on a BT landline).

Yes, they do but, AFAIAA, the freephone gateway numbers I refer to above are still accessible.

Thanks. I have free fixed line calls 24*7 so I am not sure it is really owrth it. I manually route international calls using 18866 etc. and use jajah.com for most international calls since they are free. I spend about £3 - £4 a month on calls to mobiles and non-geographic...

I am planning going to Talk Talk for phone and Broadband in a month or so's time. Can the Orchid dialer be used with Talk Talk, my landline and some International calls will be free.. but I am wondering if it can be used on calls to Mobiles and non-Geographic numbers using Talk Talk. TIA.
P.S. I did search the whole thread for Talk Talk but didn't come up with anything!!

If you hand over your line rental to another provider (like Talk Talk), you won't be able to use the 1280 prefix to 'hop back onto BT' for calls for which BT is cheaper and you'll be at their mercy as to whether access to cheap call providers remains available to you.

For example, Talk Talk bar indirect access providers (1899, 18185 and 18866) and can (although whether they do or not I don't know) bar gateway providers too if they wanted to. Some say that only applies where Talk Talk has unbundled your exchange but others say they also do it when they're just re-selling you line rental via the BT WLR arrangement.
