    safer? exactly how?

if i have 2 puters in my house connected with a lan cable, how can anyone else access my system?

but if you have a wireless router, i could sit outside your house and possibly access your system!

    NAT..

All that is protecting you is software, and software can be compromised and turned off.

    Not if it's encrypted.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

the other great thing about router v crossover, is that the router (if it's ethernet, which is better than usb) stays on 24/7 and reconnects automatically if it does go offline. So your mum and dad would have no diffs about connecting, just switch on either or both pcs and you're online.

I have the DG834G, if I remember correctly, and I use the laptop which is connectd to the router wirelessly and it goes off as it pleases and I have to put it back on again.

drive down any street and you can access lots of wireless networks.

most peeps dont have a clue. most vendors are useless.
so thousands/millions of wireless routers are out there with just the default admin and PW on them!
safer? give me a break please!

Fitting an ethernet port is surprisingly easy..... or you could go wireless using a usb socket. You asked earlier about printers, you can set them up over a network but it's not easy (in my experience) and your dad's pc would have to be on for your mum to be able to print to it. A network printer is a standalone printer which has it's own ethernet port. Very easy to set up.

It looks more complicated than it is.. The essence is that you put a password on the router config screen, and tell that to the wireless PC, it can either be done using the installation CD, or by going to a web address in IE..

Wireless routers are wired as well, so you only need one wireless adapter for the remote PC

The advantage of a router over crossover, is that the built in NAT functionality acts as an excellent firewall. With Crossover, you are relying on windows software to protect you, a router lessens the load on the PC.

More mind boggling stuff but thanks, I will look at it later too!

dont worry bout that. it was just to show you a lan port!
you wont need to worry about actually making a crossover cable!
