Wired Network, Best Router?
Comments

Been to Mum & Dads, what this thread all started out from, Mums computer has an ethernet port and Dads doesn't. How do I get round the problem of connecting Dads computer to the router.
Can I please have my shopping list as I really want to get this sorted?
2 x network cables - http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/106442 - other retailers have different lengths - measure the rough length you need.0 -
+ a router.. dg834 (wired), or dg834G (wired or wireless), assuming a BT line.
Wireless isn't normally that hard, there's probably a simple explanation for your problems, but without seeing it, it's difficult to advise.
Try installing this patch on the laptop, you never know..

winipcfg
on the PC, if it says 192.168.0.x as an ip address, you are connected. Also try ping 192.168.0.1 if successful, you are talking to the router.
I'm not sure if you could see files on the laptop from the desktop before, but if the ping works, it is probably something to do with the windows firewall or lack of file and print sharing on the laptop, or possibly there is a wireless isolation tick box in the router config, untick it
Also on the desktop, check in IE tools internet options, connections, that never dial a connection is selected.
and on desktop, try ping www.google.com
SORRY for only responding now. Desktop is connected to the router. When I try to ping 192.168.0.1, 2 packets are received and 2 are lost. When I try to ping www.google.com I am told it is an unknown host. When I try to ping www.amazon.co.uk I am told it is a bad command or file name. Does this make any more sense or does it leave it any clearer as to what the problem is?0 -
The wireless icon in the tray says I am not connected to the internet on the laptop but I am, why is this?0

on the desktop, does
http://66.249.93.104
or
ping 66.249.93.104
work?
I am confused about the laptop, one minute it's working wirelessly, then it's not, then it is.. Presumably it is now?
What icon is saying not connected to the internet?
PS you must have mistyped the amazon ping line.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

http://66.249.93.104 says bad command of filename
ping 66.249.93.104 says reeived 2 packets and lost 2 packets.
I am confused about the laptop too, as one minute it's working wirelessly, then it's not, then it is, it is now but then it hops off and when I click wireless network connection and refresh network list it says Not connected at the top but then says you are currently connected to this network.
Wireless Network connection is saying notconnected.
When I ping amazon, it says unknown host.0 -
did you do the http from the command prompt? I mean't, load IE, then click on this http://66.249.93.104 (or type it into the address bar) on the desktop
If that works, and http://www.google.co.uk doesn't, then the issue on the desktop is DNS, which is the system which translates https://www.google.co.uk into a number, in googles case 66.249.93.104
Remind me, is the desktop W98?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

When loaded on the desktop it states HTTP 400 - Bad Request. It seems to be DNS then, can this be sorted as the desktop had been networked before?0 -

Yes the desktop is W98.0 -
ping 66.249.93.104 says reeived 2 packets and lost 2 packets
This tells me that you can ping the internet, so are on the internet.
the fact that you can't ping the name suggests a DNS problem.
But, now are you saying that if you type the number into IE instead of the name, you still get an error? (Doing this normally overrides any DNS problem, and therefore should work).Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0
