On the laptop, double check this bit:
right click on your wireless network icon, view available wireless networks, change advanced settings, wireless networks, highlight your ssid, properties, connection. Make sure "connect when this network is in range" is ticked. Click OK, advanced, make sure Access point (Infrastrucure) networks only is selected, and automatically connect to non-preferred networks is unticked, click ok.
Then reboot, unwired, see what happens.
make sure you ok everything, It should work straight away or not at all, I don't understand why it takes an hour.
If it doesn't work, right click on the wireless icon and do a repair.
Inbox is emptied again. Going to reboot now.0 -

I rebooted the router and the laptop is now working but the old computer will not connect to the internet although it is showing in the router as being connected. I can see the files on the old computer while on the laptop but I cannot view the files on the laptop while on the old computer. I cannot get on the internet on the old computer. What is the problem this time?0 -

If you can see files one way but not the other, then it seems that the desktop is connected to the router ok. To check, start, run, cmd
winipcfg
on the PC, if it says 192.168.0.x as an ip address, you are connected. Also try ping 192.168.0.1 if successful, you are talking to the router.
I'm not sure if you could see files on the laptop from the desktop before, but if the ping works, it is probably something to do with the windows firewall or lack of file and print sharing on the laptop, or possibly there is a wireless isolation tick box in the router config, untick it
Also on the desktop, check in IE tools internet options, connections, that never dial a connection is selected.
and on desktop, try ping https://www.google.comEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

Will try this shortly. How can I connect a router to Dads old computer if it doesn't have a place for an ethernet cable? Does a PC LAN card fit externally?0 -

When I done start, run, cmd, I got this message,
Cannot find the file ‘cmd’ (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.
When I done winipcfg, it said 192.168.0.x as an ip address, so I was connected. I could not ping the router.
I could see files from the laptop on the desktop before. Goig to check your recommendation with regards the router settings. Never dial a connection was selected.

I cannot get connected wirelessly today either, the laptop is wired at the mo. I think it was much better when it used to hop off the network every so often rather than this way.0

Sorry, I gave you XP commands, start, run command for 98/ME.
If you have a 192 address on the PC, you should be able to
ping 192.168.0.1
ping https://www.google.com
if one works, and 2 doesn't then it may be a dns problem, which translates names (google), to numbers.
Adding encryption shouldn't make your connection any worse, try seeing if you have other wireless routers on the same channel in the area by downloading netstumbler.
If you turn encryption off, your network is wide open.., if you aren't firewalled up, then people can get at your files.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Cannot get connected wirelessly at all on the laptop. I will try you suggestions tommorrow regarding desktop.
Been to Mum & Dads, what this thread all started out from, Mums computer has an ethernet port and Dads doesn't. How do I get round the problem of connecting Dads computer to the router.
Can I please have my shopping list as I really want to get this sorted?0 -

They are going wired because it isn't worth the hassle, they are even less clued up about these things than I am.0
