I have been saving my pennies (not easy on a limited income) and I'm planning a trip to a/some European Christmas markets in December. I am enjoying finding out as much as possible about them, will probably go on Eurostar even though I can get a coach easily from here. Worried about the travel disruption in winter.

Anyway, I have to keep saving now for my spending money so it will be a frugal couple of months ahead, but worth it, hopefully.

I've had a small trip out to Trentham Gardens (Staffs) with friends and bought a few more bits today - 2 Jamie Oliver kids 'Cheeky Little Devil' mugs £2.50 (rrp £7) for my cousin's 2 boys (to add to the reindeer so far) plus a Hello Kitty little suitcase for son's girlfriend (full price at £14, but perfect for her) + some funny oven gloves £7 which she will love. My downfall is candles for myself - dandelion and burdock today! I could have bought a lot more but only on the basis that things were lovely, rather than bargains.

There were Christmas crackers and a few other bits already starting to creep in on the top shelves so no doubt they will all move to eye-level soon along with loads more stuff. Can't wait!! :)

For the past 6 or 7 years, we, as a large family, have done the secret santa thing, all of us spending £50 on a gift for the person named on the piece of paper out of the hat. We now have 3 little children and treat them individually. Anyway, £50 now seems quite a lot to each of us (even though we used to spend this on every person on our list) and, as I am in charge, I want to try and cut down for everyone this year. The obvious one is to limit the amount to, say £20pp but I would like to be a bit more creative than that, except that I am not, so can anyone think of something we could do to retain the excitement but cut the costs. We tried the buy something for £10 from a charity shop route but that didn't work. I made all my gifts one year but not everyone can do that. We don't get together on Christmas day, but on another day. I was thinking maybe we chip in £30 each and go out for a nice meal but not sure if that would work. Any ideas, please?

Well I was wondering round town today and noticed that Card Factory had half an aisle of Christmas cards out, although I must admit I don't think anyone looked brave enough to buy one!

Always makes me feel like I need to get a wriggle on when I see things appearing in the shops - though did get another (small) part of my mum's present today - some of those sachets of anti-aging face masks from Sdrug but I don't think they're miracle workers :p

Def agree with the meal idea, but you may find some still want a present to open, so maybe say £30 in total, £25 of that we put up for a meal, with the other £5 you have to do a christmas stocking, but must spend the £5, so its still a present, but being creative.

or how about spend £20 but buy something such as a goat from Oxfam, or adopt an animal xx
