did anyone else see Messr Lewis on This Morning? I think hes great but didnt really enjoy the article, he was basically saying if you give a Christmas gift to somebody who then can't afford to give you one back, you are putting them under financial pressure :(

I didnt really agree with that, as from my pov I know if a friend or family member felt that way or was in that position, they would say in advance they werent buying gifts that year, or say 'we are only buying small token gifts/ homemade gifts, or just gifts for children this year' they wouldnt feel they had to go out and get into debt to give something back! kind of took a bit of Christmas gloss off, as surely it's about the giving of a small thoughtful gift which dont need to cost the earth? was a bit too humbug for me!

    Xmas Saver!

Just to join in with the dentist topic. Had to make dd an emergency appointment today . Orthodontist couldn't see her until Friday, So had to beg our dentist to have a look. ( as a rule they don't touch braces).
Anyway dentist took one look at her and said she would have to cut brace out. DDs teeth have straightened so fast the wire had inbeded in her gum causing an absis to form. This had grown over the back inner bracket of the brace.
Dd would not have an injection, so had it cut out with no pain relief.
She is on antibiotics for a week and has orthodontist next Friday.
Dentist said she was glad I had instisted dd was seen as it was very serious, and poision was close to getting in her blood stream.

Sugaspun So sorry to hear about your Dad. xxx
  • that sounds so beautiful! any chance of posting a photo?

Thanks Snugglebunny8, but as Ruth_honey() pointed out, as a newbie I don't think I am allowed? Will be glad to when I can - and after DH has shown me how!

Lovely tree photos everyone, so beautiful.

Ruth_honey - we have 2 Father Christmases who sit on top of both room and porch trees. He is the last thing to go on, and the honour of placing him has always gone to dd. I decorate the trees, but this is her job!

No more Xmas decorating today, but have spent time with the birthday girl catching up with some telly programmes.

    Bye for now x

Hi all, will catch up in a little while, but I need to ask some advice.
My dd has recently started to show an interest in hairdressing! (she's 5). Her big sister has this year decided she wants to buy each of us a gift from her pocket money, she's been saving since October! Ive told her we would be happy with chocs or similar, but she is determined she wants to buy her sis one of those styling dolls heads. Ive searched amazon but their very expensive, or the cheap ones have really bad reviews. Can anyone recommend one? DD has £10 to spend on it, but i would be happy to put another £5 to if we can get one.
    Thanks in advance
Not sure if anyones replied yet as I havn't finished reading through all of this thread yet, they sell barbie styling heads inargos for about £10.50 also they are in the two for £15 deal so you might be able to pick something else up too :) Hope i've helped! http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9286076.htm?CMPID=GS001&_%24ja%3Dkw%3A{keyword}%7Ccgn%3Apla%7C%7C9286076%7Ctsid%3A11677%7Ccn%3Apla%7C%7C9286076%7Cmt%3A{MatchType}%7Ccrid%3A14542145259

Princess, sedation is available on the NHS - if your clinic claim they only do it privately, a quick call to your local PCT may be in order. If your dentist wont do NHS sedation himself they have to refer you to someone that will. We also advise very nervous patients who don't want sedation to see their GP for a prescription of Diazepam. It just helps to relax you for the treatment, you will need someone to take you, pick you up and look after you until it wears off. Make sure you phone the dentist to tell them you will be on a sedative as it will give them a chance to prepare HTH

Sugarspun I am so sorry hun, sending you great big hugs xxx

  • own my own - oh your poor dd, how brave to have no pain releif, I hope she has a speedy recovery & well done to you for sticking to your guns & getting her seen

Popped into morriscones on way home from work & found a lovely hardback book "christmas things to make & do". Its for children, i would say aged 3-12, lots of simple but lovely craft & baking ideas to kkep them occupied in the run-up to the big day. Our elves will be delivaring ours this Friday & i plan to let dd's choose one thing each to do over each weekend now. It was £3 and I would highly recommend, had a quick look through & got quite excited by the snowflake pinata & santa pencil toppers & & &...

Weeclick can I ask I know your are from Belfast (or nearabouts) saw your pictures of the market. Im heading in with my ds next week to visit Santa and have a nosey about. Whats it like this year? I think I missed out on it last year for some reason

Hey Yup just up the road from Belfast but work behind city hall, its a blessing most of the year until the market arrives and then I spend all day daydreaming about it or spending my lunch hour there lol. Its the same sort of stalls as the last few years theres a great wee craft stall near the hot chocolate stall at the front shes just started out and has great wee table favours which I just had to buy! She was saying she cant make them quick enough they sell that fast and I believe her! Def worth a visit if you have the time really lifts your spirits but crowded as always and all the food stalls seem to be stuck on charging £5 for everything lol. Have a great time Im planning on another trip before it goes, We are getting cupcakes from the new cupcake stall to have on christmas and the nuts stall :D

Cant say I agree to it either but I can see where he is coming from! My sister has never had much luck with work, shes only ever managed part time jobs and is now unemployed desperate for a full time job with no luck given the current downturn. Christmas is our families chance to get her what she needs without her feeling guilty or like shes a charity case. Along with her hamper of presents for her and her OH I do them a small gift bag of staple / cupboard foods and a gift bag filled with food and treats for her 2 cats and shes always grateful, we always get a small token gift which she spends months saving for (around £5 a head Id say, a little more on the kids in the family and then her OH) and theres always so much thought put into her gifts that they are in our eyes just as valuble as the gifts we give her. Even if she wasnt able to afford a gift (she knows she doesnt have to give gifts we all understand her situation) it wouldnt stop us giving her gifts as I really think she does rely on the extra help! :D

Started our secret santa at work today, should be good fun, my first christmas in this job which makes it more exciting! ive also got a christmas business lunch and our departments christmas evening drinks to go to on Friday - am I mad to think I should go to the gym between leaving work at 5pm and meeting up for drinks at 8? Others think Im mad but I want to get a work out between eating a big meal and drinking however many calories!

So excited that most of the presents are now wrapped and under the tree it feels ultra christmassy in here now and really look forward to getting home in the evenings to enjoy it all makes sitting in rush hour traffic all the more worth it!
Life is what you make it.

well i am back from my first ever craft fair...very depressed:( between us my friend and I made £27.50 (she sold more of her things than I did). I sold some coaster calendars and two packs of ES mints.
Everyone was saying how slow it was:(. I don't know if people just weren't looking for things for Christmas or people in Durham don't like homemade/handmade things. there were only about 3 people with children and they were babies. They didn't even look at the "santa stop here" door hangers or Christmas mugs.

not sure if I will do another fair or not...at the moment no

so I have opened the box of Thorntons I had in the cupboard to cheer me up

Hello *wave* where abouts in Durham was this? I live in Lanchester and love craft fairs but haven't seen any advertised! Did you go into town for the christmas market over the weekend?
