Oh and I do have a contactless card which I find pretty useful at times, although it may be a gimmick.
I did however lose my wallet with one in before and it made me very quick to cancel the card!!! Luckily enough, no one used it0 -
It is sometimes outside the banks control.
For example If you bought something that cost 100 euros today and for arguments sake it cost £82. The bank would reserve £82 from the account and you can spend the rest. Which you do.
However the exchange rate is applied on the day it is debited from your account not the date of the authorisation, and if the exchange rate changes, lets say its now going to cost £83 for 100 euros, you are now £1 overdrawn.
That has happened to me before, on several occasions, with my Barclayplus account (now YPA account).
I buy something online in a foreign currency, the exchange rate changes when it comes in, I'm up to £1 in the negative (it's been more).
Thankfully, they don't charge because I'm under 18, however it was scary the first time...
I always leave more in the bank when I've made an international purchase now (or I try to, sometimes it still happens).

P.S Sorry for bumping an old thread... I just had to reply to this0 -
You need to be 18 years old to have a "proper" debit card.
So therefore, I don't think your bank will issue you with a contactless card. I'm sure they can only by law issue you with a Cash Card or VISA Electron.
I'm only 23 and only got a Debit Card with embedded numbers when I was 18. I believe I had a VISA Electron and Cash Card beforehand.
Kind Regards,
Alan
Wrong. I have a full Visa Debit card, which works fine.
You can get one from 11.

No, I'm not. I own my own forums... I know how annoying spam is.
(I did it again, but I forgot to respond, so I had to decide, ignore it or respond. I chose respond, but this is the last time.)0 -
My son just received a replacement for his chip and pin card which he lost on a trip to the cinema, they sent him contactless an I think this is unsafe since he lost the last one within a few months he is 15 and it was from Barclays he didn't even realise he lost the last one for over a week but isn't it said you are liable after 24 hrs, imagine a 15 yr old in debt!! He only keeps basic spend in the account0

After he has lost the card once, he should at least know what to do if he loses the card again. He should also know how to take better care of it, and he should familiarise himself with the T&Cs which apply to contactless cards. He shouldn't be trying to be clever and lose the card on purpose after some contactless spends, as the surest way to having no account at all is to try and con the bank out of some money.0
