Crocodileteeth can I just ask you to get advice from a dietitian, preferably one who is neutral about veganism/omnivorism. If your doctors are concerned about a B12 deficiency you do have to be careful, it can cause irreversible nerve damage if not handled properly. Although I would assume that they have offered you B12 shots for it if that is the case.
I don't really want to go into this sort of thing too much as we're not allowed to give medical advice here and I'm certainly not qualified to. I just wanted to pop that in there because I've been a little concerned that you might be going against medical advice without the support of a qualified dietitian etc.The stupid things you do, you regret... if you have any sense, and if you don't regret them, maybe you're stupid. - Katharine Hepburn0 -
Hi all, I'm not vegan, not even veggie to be honest
Just wanted to ask all you knowledgable people a question if that's ok?
Where do you get your calcium intake from? - other than soya?
I can't have dairy but soya doesn't agree with me either. I'm a bit concerned that I'm not getting enough calcium but other than buying tablets which I'd prefer not to do, can't seem to find a huge amount of information as to how much of what else I need to be eating to get enough calcium?
After a brainwave I thought that you guys would probably be more help than anyone else on the anti-milk product front
Loads of places - seeds, dark green veg, etc etc0 -

Sorry personal pet hate - any form of apricots - makes me shudder.
Most (non-vegan) people and websites offer the choices of eating tinned fish with bones in, milk products, soya and dried apricots - usually in that order and none of which I would eat by choice!!
So far I have bought and been eating dried figs (quite nice, especially added to porridge or flapjack), sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, nuts, kale, spinach (which I buy anyway). Also have cabbage in the fridge and planning on getting greens next time I go shopping.
Have also been walking more to do my shop as that should also help build up me bonesI suspect that I am probably high risk of osteoporosis in later life due to lack of dairy in my diet, but hoping I can make a difference to my diet from now on.

How cool to find this thread! I'm new to MSE Forums, but have been a vegan for mm 3 or 4 years (and a "mostly vegan" before that for awhile).
For a vegan chocolate cake, I can't recommend this one highly enough: http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/showthread.php?t=25805
It uses cocoa powder, but is so so so moist and delicious!
Some more info on vegan calcium:

And, for the B12 issue, I'd definitely say to get a blood test if you're having concerns. I have some trouble absorbing it myself, but take a sublingual tablet now and that seems to have cleared things up. The effects take a long time generally though, to show up, as most people have some B12 stored in their intestinal tracts.
Yay for veganism!
Oh..and if you're looking for milk, but don't like the soya, you could also try rice milk (I've seen it at most every supermarket) or almond milk or even Oatly oat milk (only seen these at a HFS or at Waitrose).Pick battles big enough to matter, small enough to win. - Jonathan Kozol0 -
Hi everyone,
I'm not a vegan, but have a daughter who is allergic to mushrooms and mycoprotein so we've gotten into the habit of eating quite a bit of smoked tofu. Not so keen on the original or marinated ones.
However lately, I'm having trouble sourcing it. Some stores seem to have discontinued it. I've already contacted Cauldron who tell me it is obtainable.
Would be very grateful if anybody could let me know if they have found any. I'm in Suffolk.
Many thanks in advance.New Mantra: I must not visit MSE until after I've completed all my chores!!!!!0 -
Health food shops will generally order it for you if ask them, alternatively ask one of the distributors who supply these shops who they supply in your area. Hope this helps.0

No worries about osteoporosis due to lack of dairy....the animal protein in dairy products can actually leech calcium from your bones! Much better to get your calcium from veg sources!! I have been vegan for eight years and have no issues with my health...I am always the one who is never off sick from work!! :rotfl:0 -

Same here - very rarely ill since I went vegan (used to get any flu or bug that was going round before I did).0 -
I'm not vegetarian or vegan but have recently suffered the most awful bout of sinusitis ever - literally crying with the pain. After doing some research and speaking to a herbalist friend as to how to avoid getting this again - cutting out dairy seems to be the way to go and believe me I want to avoid this big style. I didn't actually think I ate that much dairy but there are all the hidden dairy items. I do intend to give some of the vegan recipes on here a go.0
