How many vegans on board?

Sorry I have never tried that braised tofu stuff.
I just wanted to ask do other vegans not use anything with animal ingredients or that has been animal tested?
I try to use as little as possible but I know some people use medicines for example even though most/all have been tested on animals.
I haven't been vegan that long but one thing I need to find a replacement for is my hair colour I had my highlights done recently (:o which I know I shouldn't) but I have tried the vegan alternatives and they were quite lame I have to say.:rolleyes:HOUSE MOVE FUND £16,000/ £19,000

Wow, thats a huge great can of worms that you may have just, potentially, opened up.
I believe that this is down to the individuals ethics. A dictionary - defined vegan would not use items that are tested on animals.
I consider myself to be a vegan - I eat, wear and use nothing which is, or has been derived from, an animal. Neither do I eat honey or use products which have been tested on animals.
All that said, I have very, very high blood pressure. I have asked if there is a vegan (or even vegetarian) version of the tablets that I am on and have been told that there isn't. I am at risk of a stroke if I do not take these tablets so I have had to make a decision as to whether to take them or not. I decided to take them. I guess that this does not make me a dictionary - defined vegan
Hair colourant, on the other hand, is vanity and is something which I can live without and I personally would not choose to colour my hair with any product which either contains anything animal derived or tested on them.
So whilst I would say that, IMHO, you would not be a vegan if you used these hair dyes, someone else could say to me that I am not a vegan due to my taking these tablets.0 -
Does anyone know how long tinned brazed tofu lasts once opened?
We opened one on Saturday and forgot about it. I was thinking of trying to make some sort of fishless pie with it tomorrow. I haven't used it for cooking yet, just raw in salads.
Did you eat it then, Sleepy?
It would be interesting to know as I can see you are currently online, so I know that you are reasonably safe and well, therefore if you ate it we all now know that we can leave the stuff in the fridge for at least two days and not get rushed off to casualty!
I'm a firm believer that it's always best to test this sort of thing out on other people rather than myself0 -

That's what I mean oldMcDonald. It's difficult as to where the line is drawn.
I do not take any medications at all because I don't feel I need to as I am quite healthy. I wouldn't even take nurofen for a headache, but I wouldn't call someone "not vegan" because they do, it's very judgemental and annoying and I hate that aspect of self righteousness some vegans have ("the vegan police" in other words ha ha.)
Also, as far as I am aware going to the dentist is not vegan because the products etc they use are tested on animals, also I know vegans who smoke and cigarettes are tested on animals and IMO owning a car isn't vegan and I know a few vegans who have more than one car (but then I wouldn't judge someone if they did.)
I just think we have to make the best way we can in an extremely non-vegan world. I really live to my own rules I suppose and look at the bigger picture of why I don't eat/use animal products.
Saying that does anyone know how I can get my hair highlighted (well) in a vegan way????:DHOUSE MOVE FUND £16,000/ £19,000

its a big question over medicines
alot of vegans do drink alcohol (vegan of course) but its still tested routinely on animals.
as for meds I have found enough ways to remove them or replace them.
Good vegan diest usually mean health is much better and drugs shouldn't really be needed except in the case of emergency.
I use a site https://www.drjoeesposito.com as he provides alot of the answers
I also use a chiropractor for a 6 month check up as that keeps away colds etc if the old back & nervous syetem is on order.
As mentioned it has to be a personal thing & I usually find there are healthy veggies who dont need to use drugs and then there are others not so healthy.
I have noticed though that veggies who eat alot of dairy seem to have alot more health problems than those that eat only a little
Gnever take advice from broke or unsuccessful people

I know ours isn't, as we make it ourselves!!Good vegan diest usually mean health is much better.....
Out of interest (and I'm not meaning to sound arguementative:) ) has an independant study ever been done on this? (The reason I ask is that it may be useful to use for a college essy I am to write later in the year!)..... and drugs shouldn't really be needed except in the case of emergency.
Whilst I agree with this to some extent, there are many times that meds have to be used routinely. For example, I have high blood pressure due to kidney problems. This has nothing to do with diet, and would be the case were I a meat eater who worked my way through six cows a year!I also use a chiropractor for a 6 month check up as that keeps away colds etc if the old back & nervous syetem is on order.
This is really interesting, I thought they just put your back back where it should be when it was out. This is definitely something I will look into, thanks
Ta for the link, too.......something I have bbokmarked to take a longer look at when I have a little more time0 -

Sleepy, you know I luvs ya to bits, but that is just cruel.
You've made me feel all guilty now, just in case thats true (and I'm pretty sure it isn't!).0 -
Hehehe no need to feel guilty O'MD
hubby ended up eating it and he's got a lead stomach so I'm not sure if it kept well or not. I reckon it could keep 4 days but not sure if I'd risk any longer.

On the medication side of things, I have to take daily meds or I would be even more incapacitated with pain and lack of sleep than I am now. I relish the day I have a headache that's mild enough to not need drugs! I've tried lots of complimentary methods over the last 10yrs and will continue to do so until I'm well again.
I have trouble dying my hair myself (health reasons) so had been getting the hairdresser to do it (I've got a grey fringe and the rest is brunette). However I discovered that Daniel Field dyes work very well for me and am hoping that I can continue to dye it myself. If not I'll take it to my hairdresser and get her to put it in. Atm I'm sitting with very grey roots and look like a tinker
I've seen it written that vegan's should try to eliminate animal products/animal tested products as mush as is practical and possible. I find the diet is the easiest part of it. I don't believe anyone should make themselves ill through denying themselves medication or whatever they truly need to be healthy. I don't see any sense in being too ill to partake in the work that's needed to assist animals in need nor do I see the point in being kind to one species to be cruel to yourself, or another of your own species. I don't know if that makes me a good vegan or not but it's the type I choose to be.The stupid things you do, you regret... if you have any sense, and if you don't regret them, maybe you're stupid. - Katharine Hepburn0
