I have been wanting to go back to being vegan for some time, but as the only one in a family of 6 its difficult, especially as I already cook separate meals often for my coeliac son too. I have to confess to absolutely loving the taste and texture of meat and cheese.:o
LOL aww you make me look a right meanie!
I'm wheat intolerant and vegetarian (partly health, partly sanity, partly animal welfare), one of the reasons I didn't go veggie earlier was the faff of cooking seperate meals  But now it's great as everyone in my house eats the same as me, sometimes the 3 of them may have a meat version of something but I don't have to cook it or go near it thankfully! :T What we eat now is FAR healthier than before, and I've noticed the lads are looking a heck of a lot healthier too, outside of the house they can eat their own choices, which are generally quite healthy anyway.:D

I'm a newbie veggie and suspect I have food intolerances (wheat and possibly dairy - going to get it checked out). I'm still getting used to the veggie stuff and am not sure if I'll go vegan yet but I'll keep looking back here with interest.

I have to say its been much easier than it was the last time. The 3 of us that are left all ate vegan last night, though my oh and youngest son of 19!! are eating their way through the freezer full of food ( meat!!) at the moment. It will be a while before its emptied, but after that I will only buy meat occasionally for them. Then its their choice as to what they do.

And its so much cheaper too.

Okay I've taken the plunge (or rather my body took it for me) and gone vegan. Have done some research on vegan nutrition in the past and will be reading up again; I want to do it right and fully expect to feel massively more healthy (and guiltfree). I already felt better for being veggie for 3 weeks and I've gone right off the idea of dairy and eggs. Bought some small tubs of salady things from M&S to see what I like and don't like - just had a veg samosa and a butternut squash, toasted pumpkin seed & chilli salad which was really yummy. Off now to research further.

Hallo folks, sorry I've been neglecting this thread for a while :o. Welcome to all the newbie vegans/vegan thread members . I'd be interested if it's working out for you Tam Lin & the other's attempting veganism?

I'm trying to do a bit of work on my diet atm. Trying to loose a few (too many :o ) pounds and sort out possible food sensitivities. Was at the Bristol Vegan fayre last month and went to Gareth Zeals talk, he was saying how food sensitivities are bad for stopping people loose weight. Has anyone any experience of this?

Hi mascherano, some people say the york laboratory test is good. I haven't had it done personally because it's very expensive and I don't eat most of the foods on it anyhow. Your gp can test you but these aren't the most reliable of tests and are normally only for true allergies.

You can do a food elimination test yourself and keep a symptom diary. I think you exclude the suspect food for 3 weeks then gradually re-introduce it and record any symptoms i.e. bloating, itching, cramps etc.

Gareth Zeal said that comparing your resting heartbeat to what it is after you've eaten a suspect food is the most reliable way. It was something like - record your resting heartbeat - eat suspect food - record your heartbeat - then record it again 20mins later... I don't think I've got it quite right. I'd like to try and find out exactly which way he said it to try it myself.

GP aside,is there no where that will do it for free, I'm certainly not willing to pay to find out. Which service is recommended by the national institute for clinical excellence (NICE) or the DoH?
