How many vegans on board?

  • Hi I became vegan by accident. I was with a group of people and the only food was vegan. I was previously a carnivore but thought "I can do it for 4 days". As you know it is a wonderful diet and I felt fantastic. "I'll see how long I can last" was my next thought. 3 years later I'm still vegan. However the difference between myself and many of you, I suspect, is that my main concern is not for animals but humans. I fully subscribe to the philosophy of Living simply in order that others can simply live. I fits in with my concerns for the environment and the ethical treatment of the whole world.

As for a recipe involving mushrooms this is my Sunday Morning lazy breakfast.

    Creamy mushrooms on toast.

Slice a handful of mushrooms and fry in a little oil
Add some garlic (I use too much my family tell me!)
When that has cooked for about a minute then add some flour to the mixture (about a heaped tablespoon)
Once you have stirred that in and it has absorbed the fat then add some soy milk and keep stirring.
Check for taste - you might need to add some salt.

    Serve on toast.

Be nice to each other - we convert more by our actions than we realise.

That sounds great - am a massive garlic fan and after coming back from a good night out i love toast with tomato puree and garlic puree all mixed together.
I have enough money to last me the rest of my life, unless I buy something

    This morning I juiced

    3 organic carrots
    1 organic apple
    3 handfuls organic spinach
    1/2 a red onion
a nub of ginger (about 1/4 an onion size)
and added a glass of bottled beetroot juice

The onion and ginger is giving it a bit of bite but not any more than I can handle, wimp that I am :D I have about a pint of it so will sip it slowly though the day. I forgot to add garlic but have garlic & onion soup for dinner. Man I am gonna smell sooooo bad this week :o

I think I need a new juicer but don't think I could stretch to £100. Does anyone know one that is easy to clean?

I've been through so many in the last year! I use mine at least once a day.

I say avoid any of those ones with a tap as their so damned hard to clean and tend to be mostly of plastic construction that stains real bad. Glass is definately the one to go for and stainless steel blades (ie totally stainless steel and not plastic base with blades attached).

I bought a Philips HR2094 from Amazon for £69.97 but noticed this last week at TESCO direct for £54.97. Looks cool, very easy to clean and all inner surfaces are either glass or steel so remain stain free! And it's more powerful than many more expensive brands and includes a nut/soy milk attachment.

Thanks mon(can we call you monty for short?), I have a good food processor with a blender attachment. The juicer I'm trying to replace is a lil juice extractor. Does that phillips extract juice or just pulp fruit?

Mine separates the pulp and empties the juice into a jug. The pulp is very good for making paper out of if you're feeling creative.

Tell you what this onion, ginger, spinach thing is clearing my chest. Along with the garlic & onion soup I'll hopefully not have this lurgy for too long. It's a !!!!!! not being able to get out into this lovely weather, I'm itching to get a bit of gardening done.

I'm vegan have been for nearly 2 years now and was veggie before that for about a year and a half. I did a sposered veggie week when I was 9 or 10 and I wish I had gone veggie then to be honest not that I ate meat all that often anyway but it was still eaten. My sister is veggie and goes vegan every now and then for health reasons but never sticks to it for more than 3 months at a time  . Terrible really as when she follows a vegan diet she feels SOO much better  . A few of my relatives are veggie also and I have veggie friends to. It would be nice to know another VEGAN though. Although one of my veggie mates is considering veganism as I told him about the implications of milk and eggs  .
I am a vegan woman. My OH is a lovely omni guy :D

Well, thanks a lot you guys!!!!!

I have been wanting to go back to being vegan for some time, but as the only one in a family of 6 its difficult, especially as I already cook separate meals often for my coeliac son too. I have to confess to absolutely loving the taste and texture of meat and cheese.:o The thing is - I recognise the cruelty involved in meat and dairy production, but I never go just vegetarian because I feel equally guilty about eating cheese as I do eating meat. So its all or nothing for me, and so I have continued to eat meat and dairy.

Anyway - whoever posted that link to the film of slaughter, and cruelty - well done. You have strenghtened my resolve and I have now been vegan for (a whole:p ) two weeks.:j

Plus 3 of my sons appear to be moving out this week so my family has halved almost overnight. ( I do hope it wasn't because I've been eating too many beans):rotfl:

anyway - top marks for making me reconsider my position in this family ( and world) and take control of my own life. I have to say its so much easier being vegan this time than it was the last time!!

Thank goodness for sainsburys labelling system too - I can often get vegan and gluten free stuff there. Their stem ginger cookies in the free from section are to die for.

    thanks everyone:beer:
