Discipline at school

Are teachers still allowed to make children stand with their hands on their head?.

My eldest has just come home from high school and the whole class were made to do this today for 20mins. He is in agony now with his shoulder.

Just some advice please before I go to the school. This was a supply teacher.

Thanks

Why did they have to do it?

You could ring the local tv station or write to your MP or you could tell your child to behave in future.

No reason...at all? Do you believe that? Does it sound likely?

And it was definately 20 minutes was it? We all know that 5 minutes can feel like a lifetime sometimes.

Of course he's going to say there's no reason. He's not going to come home and say he was punished because he was really naughty is he :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:.

    Exactly!

There are 2 sides to every story, and you need to give this teacher a chance. It's hardly a stress position, and the last time I checked, we don't accept teachers that have graduated from Guantanamo teacher training college.

I'm also pretty certain there's nothing wrong with your DS, apart from his / his classmates' attitude?

I find it hard to believe that a young healthy kid would be 'in agony' simply from having his hands on his head for 20 minutes.

If he is genuinely that sore, then I would make an appointment with your GP because that is very unusual and warrants checking imo.

I suspect his 'agony' may be little more than a slight ache and he's laying it on to support his indignation on having been made to do this.

Personally, if this were my daughter, I'd have told her 'tough, you'll know to behave/stop talking etc etc etc next time'.

I have huge issues with unfairness especially at school, but not even I would moan about this one tbh.

Welshsue, not sure whether your post is for real :rotfl:but anyway if it is:-

Don't know whether teachers are allowed to do this or not, but seems pretty harmless to me unless he had a pre-existing injury of the shoulder, as normal hands on head for 20 minutes shouldn't cause an injury.

Does he have difficulty in playing any sports?

I think teachers are 'allowed' to do that (I was never expressly told during teacher training that I couldn't!) though it doesn't seem like the best form of discipline to me. However, no matter how lovely your son is, I'd take his version of the story with a pinch of salt. The nicest classes turn into ravaging monsters with a supply teacher. As someone else has said, chances are it was more like 5 minutes than 20 and was probably a last resort when the class were being awful.
