Discipline at school

I have teenage boys and school discipline is often ineffective with them for instance I dispair that my eldest who is really lazy often chooses not to do a piece of homework as he thinks a detention will be the easier option. In fact that is the case tonight he was in detention for not doing a piece of latin homework that was too much effort. If he's in detention he relys on us picking him up as he misses the school bus. So tonight he has to wait for his father to finish work before being picked up and it is tipping down with rain. So may be a little more punishment than he was bargaining for!
What are the consequences at home for this disgraceful behaviour? You should be disciplining such laziness out of them.0 -
op you say high school but this means different ages across the country so how old is your son?
i too would be concerned that having his hands on his head has resulted in 'injury', has he had problems in this area before, i would go to the gp
i dont believe standing with hands on heads is particularly effective but what context was this in, i would also doubt that a supply teacher (who children tend to misbehave for) would be able to get a group of surly teens to stand that long, i would bet it was 5 mins or so
are you sure there was 'no' reason at all?0 -
has anyone here tried to hold their hands on their heads for 5 minutes? never mind 20 minutes!
before you have a go at welshsue then go try it! There is a reason for authority figures making people surrender with hands up or on thier heads.
This method of punishment went out with the ark - it was common during the fifties and sixties and I can assure you that it was painful in the shoulders, and when you brought your hands down the pins and needles in them were awful.
welshsue I can understand your concern and I would go talk to the teacher involved if they are there tomorow and get their version! then decide what to do.
oh and if your child is still complaining of shoulder pain in an hour or two dont hesitate to take them to A&E - there could be nerve damage.0 -

This is ironic.0 -
If a teacher has enough power to make kids stand with their hands on their heads for 20 minutes, then they would not have the need to do it. I work in a school by the way.The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0

Tesuhoha, you have just said, much more succinctly, what another poster and I both said a few posts back. You're absolutely right
