your right, £60 is a bit steep for 20 minutes of parking, was this a free car park, or a pay and display?
if its a pay and display/pay car park work out how much it costs per minute, or per charge block ( ie 30 minutes/1 hour) and thats all you owe them as a full and final settlement, anything else is a penalty charge and they cant impose penaltys or fines as there a private company, if you use that formula it probably cpomes to something thats a fair bit lower than £60, infact by charging that much it is a penalty and saying that the cost goes up by a ridiculous amount enforces this further.

If on the other hand the car park is free, you still use the same logic, Cost of parking (P) for 30 minutes time(T) =£0.00

P multiplied by T = the amount that you may owe them as a full and final settlement.

All that aside, the best option is to keep the paper guff they send you and take a look on here, theres a set of letters that you can expect, you might be able to play PPC snap, or PPC bingo with them as they come in. if you know whats coming theenn there shouldnt be anything to worry about.
    From the Plain Language Commission:

"The BPA has surely become one of the most socially dangerous organisations in the UK"
  • it was a pay and display car park.

That's what she's there for... makes a change actually we get a lot of wives on here who are fine with giving the parking company the bum's rush, but say it's hubby who's nervous... men of steel, you Geordies!
  • just found out reading further down through the forum that :-

car parking and select services ltd of mansfield are not members of BPA, but they do have the logo on the PCN!!!

The thread was posted on the 5/4/12 so unless they have joined they should not be able to retrieve my address details from the DVLA???

great forum, great advice, keep it up guys!

If you are right then wait and see if any letters arrive I think, then if they do complain in the strongest terms to the DVLA as any release of data would be unlawful if not to a parking company in the AOS scheme. A PPC not in the AOS scheme should not be able to get the information at all, even with a written request - this was confirmed in a FOI request to the DVLA by a poster here (NevMetson I think).

If you are sure they are not in the BPA membership list at all then report them to Trading Standards for using a misleading 'industry logo':

    http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/advice/consumer-advice.cfm

Bottom of page, find the nearest Trading Standards office to your post code.

And you could of course report them to the BPA just to create another complaint (do not state anything about the parking situation or who was driving or even in the car). But you must understand that the BPA are not a regulator, they are just a group of parking companies who might slap the wrist of any non-member then send them an application form to join I suspect!
PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

  • just checked the list on :-

britishparking website (won't let me post the website url)

and there not on the list even though they use the emblem on the ticket, so will call the BPA tomorrow and make them aware of it, won't tell them anything as regards to the ticket though.

Glad i got the ticket now, its amazing the things you learn from a situation like this and the people out there who want to help.

    cheers again guys :T

You can complain to the BPA but don't expect any form of result. It's a bit like complaining to Ali Baba that you have been robbed by the Forty Thieves. It is simply an association of the companies themselves, not any form of independent body.

Mention that to your M.P. when you see him....

The British Pirates Association. Actually, that's an insult to pirates.

Personally, I'd love to see their reply. I could do with a laugh.

  • well called BPA and they don't have car parking & select services as one of their members, although on the ticket is a black box with CPS then services underneath, but he didn't have them either!
