We are having an early tea so here it is:

Pork chops with lemon and mint couscous (first time I've picked mint this year:j) and fresh ginger yoghurt.
Very healthy and clean tasting. :)

    Cost:
    93p whoopsied chops,
    Mint free
    Lemon 5p
    Couscous around 40p worth
Fresh ginger was 4p for about 5 roots which were whoopsied. I used half a root so less than a penny's worth,
Yoghurt was 5 big pots for a quid. I used a third of a pot so about 7p worth.
Cumin was about 2p worth (I bulk buy from Asian shops)

    Around £1.50 for 4 servings = 38p per serving:j:T
    That is an early meal!

Thanks for all the encouragement guys.
My main problem has been spending money on snacks, as the kids are both moaning we have no snacks in.
So this afternoon, i went through the biscuits/cakes list of page 1, and copied and pasted about 9 recipes to try out, so we can bake our own.
Looking forward to the choc orange muffins!!

I don't know how many children you have to make cakes/biscuits for. If you make something cake/biscuit wise when you cook the evening meal - you can build up a running stock. Put some of each make/bake in the freezer or a tin hidden away. Then have a biscuit/cake tin/box that the children are allowed to have something from - mine had a snack after school - so well before dinner. If you don't have the oven on - you can do a batch of krispie/cornflake cakes. By baking/making on a regular basis - if you have oven space - batch bake - you will not have to buy ready made cakes/biscuits. Hth.

Kids set out at 4.15 for their indoor rock climbing lesson. They like to stay a good while after the session finishes so it was a toss up over an early meal or a late meal. I figured they probably need the calories before the exercise :D

I bet they will still have cereal before bedtime though!!!

Thanks Florenceem- i have 2 boys, both of which eat more than i do in a single day!

I love the idea of baking biscuits/cakes while also cooking dinner, to save putting the oven on twice. Nice one :)

I think next week i am going to go to the nearest city and have a trawl through the many many charity shops in hopes that i'll find some baking trays/cake tins etc.

Craig well done - great haul - i could imagine the restrained gallop to get there lol
Flo Lovely onion soup - can we have the recipe - thinking of getting more of the lidl onions - too good an offer to miss
Cleggie - you haven't really gone that far over, its all a learning experience and if you really stock take, you might surprise yourself how many meals you have in stores.
Eliza lovely looking pizza - can we have an after pic when cooked,

Save Dosh - totally agree with all you said! JJ - the onion soup does look fantastic! Eliza - that pizza looks amazing, hope it tasted as good as it looked!

We've just finished the big batch of mushroom soup I made earlier in the week. I'm away at the weekend, so DH will be fending for himself!:p There's chicken curry and chilli in the freezer, so he should be ok. Just one main meal to make tomorrow - I think we'll have old burgers from the freezer with veg and baked potato. I had a pineapple that we bought half price a couple of weeks ago, which was going a bit mouldy :D, so I added a mango, tinned pears, YS raspberries and blueberries, and we have a humungous fruit salad which needs using up. It'll keep DH nice and regular while I'm away!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Have a good evening all :)

Boot fairs are good for baking stuff - or were - don't get to many. 99p and £ shops sell baking tins/trays too. You can always start off with cheap ones - may be put bakeware on a Mother's Day/pressie list?

When I had a family to feed I always had a few dozen ready made pastry cases cut out in the freezer, it only took a couple of minutes to get them out and line a tin to make a batch of jam tarts when I had the oven on. Saved me loads on bought cake. Would do for a pud as well with some custard.

I dont find CS the best deal for baking tins, carboot or the 99p shop, poundland are great quality.
