Nationwide Mortgages - How long??

  • I'm so glad I didn't go through a mortgage adviser, just seems like one more middle man.

I guess I've got 3 weeks to wait still. Nearly a month waiting for a valuation is pathetically !!!!. Takes the !!!! really.
  • Don't be put off mbkn123 - we had a period when we were on the phone to the new business section several times a day. They really are the most incompetent bunch imaginable. One moment you'll speak to someone sensible who'll correct everything, then the next time you call you'll get a jobsworth who'll say "oh, they shouldn't have done that" and you'll be back to square one. They have secret fax machine numbers that you can find out if you're lucky, otherwise your documents are in a 5 day queue every time. Under no circumstances are you allowed to speak to the case advisor who's doing the work (or not, in Mandy's case)

Don't be put off though - I'm typing this from my lovely new home. The manager of the branch you've faxed your documents from will probably enjoy putting a rocket up them - ours did, as he's as frustrated as we were by how they're run.

    Good luck! DLTBGYD.

I saw your thread, that really sucks! Are you doing anything about it out of interest? I would at least speak to Nationwide I think. Ours is taking 3 weeks but fine for us because of the chain, its really frustrating to wait though.
Aim - BUYING A HOUSE  by November 2013!

  • We have been having an absolute nightmare with Nationwide recently and I am not surprised to see others have had problems too.

They issued us with an agreement in principle on 25th July and full offer on 13th August. I called to ensure everything was ready to go on 28th August to be told the offer had been withdrawn due to an undeclared loan. Nobody had called, emailed or sent a letter to let us know.

We established that this was an error and was a hire car on my credit file, not a loan or HP. After submitting an appeal where I was told it should all be OK, but the withdrawal was upheld. This time it was because we had 2 buy to lets so could only apply for 85% ltv not 90%. This was a different reason entirely!! All of this had been declared from the start and full documentation provided. No explanation could be given why the offer had been made then withdrawn.

We are still trying to resolve this now over 6 weeks after applying. no-one at Nationwide takes responsibility and you speak to somebody different every time and go over the same story.

They seem to be doing all they can not to lend despite us providing them with everything they needed within days of applying.

Finally got our offer through....9 WEEKS after applying!

Can anyone else beat that? I knew it would take a little bit longer due to my former bankruptcy but even my FA is not happy with how long it has taken.
  • It is good to see that others are having a nightmare with Nationwide at the minute and it is not just me.

I applied online for an agreement in principal. The website said someone would ring back in 24 hours; no one did! I had to contact them several times before I even got to someone who knew what was going on. It eventually took 18 days for the agreement in principal to be sent to me.

I then returned the application, within 3 days, with all the documents they asked for and it is now 7 weeks since then and I haven’t once been contacted by Nationwide. They have also had the survey report for over 3 weeks now and still no answer.

Every time I ring up I get someone different who can’t or won’t tell me where my application is or when I can expect to receive an answer. I ask for the person who is handling my case to contact me and they never do!

I can’t see what the problem is as I am putting down a 47% deposit, the mortgage is only 2.8 times my salary and I have a clean credit file. The frustrating thing is the complete lack of information I am receiving from Nationwide. I wouldn’t be bothered even if they said ‘we don’t trust your application so we are doing extra checks’ because at least I would know that something is happening. Currently, I have no knowledge of whether my application is being dealt with or not.

The current customer service from Nationwide is an absolute disgrace. I have never felt so powerless in my entire life. I will be moving my money from them irrespective of whether the mortgage gets approved or not as well as a compliant being sent addressed to their Chief Executive.

Anyway that is my rant over! I’m now going to check with my employer’s HR department to see if they have been asked for a reference and if so, try and get the Nationwide contact name.

We have had the same problems about who is actually dealing with our case. I don't actually think any one person does. I asked for the name of one advisor I spoke to for over an hour. He gave me his name but said he would not be dealing with the case and would probably be unable to take a call if I phoned in. You just get passed form pillar to post and are told you will be contacted "within 48 hours", for which the record so far has been 5 days!!!

Staff in the call centre just seem indifferent. Like I told them, I would get a better service applying for a Nectar card. They are from the "computer says no" customer service school.

We have already complained but don't expect that to help. We will then probably have to refer it to the Financial Ombudsman Service. This may help you too. I would post the link but as a new user cannot yet post links.
  • Just a quick update to say thanks to all for your encouragement and tell the rest of you to hang in there... we exchanged yesterday!!

It transpires our (rubbish) mortgage advisor made lots of mistakes when applying for the mortgage on our behalf. Clearly Nationwide can't sort a valuation when the postcode is wrong...

Anyway, I just went for it and kept phoning Nationwide and, yes, the quality of the advisors is variable, but some are amazing.
Friday: offer comes through - wrong purchase price on documents
    Monday: ask for new offer.
Tuesday: new offer faxed to solicitors
    Wed: exchanged
    Monday: we are completing!!!

Good luck to the rest of you

  • What can I do about it! It takes as long as it takes, 12 days to go. I'm just hoping they offer the mortgage very soon after the valuation. Come on exchange.

Our latest Nationwide application was submitted on 28 August and offered on 5 September.

I'm sure the case would have been much quicker if we weren't involved to slow things down.
