Would a sign saying "If you are cold calling I charge £50 a minute for you taking my time" with the usual legalese of knocking forms acceptance etc on the end stand up in court?

Might make us a few quid instead.
This was 6 months out of date so I've changed it.

Everest have a justly good reputation for their canvassing behaviour and are very tough with those who do not follow the code. If you see the man again then get his employee code number from his ID card which should be on display when he is working, and report him.

You must be reading straight from an Everest brochure. I don't believe Everest have a good reputation for anything !

The best sign is on one of our neighbours, it says
"Doorstep sellers, religious conversions and chuggers !
The dog can reach the gate in 0.97 seconds, prepare to find out if you can beat this time when I open the door"

...Biggest company by far are worst offender is talk talk, both on phone and door

They ignored my requests on cold calling on phone I must have told them a dozen times. I left the company after that so lost business forever. I had to buy truecall to stop them pestering me. They still do it at least once a month at the door despite the sign they really are a utter sham-bulls of a company

Yep, I just had one today, a very polite young man with an identity badge and notebook. When I pointed to the 'No Cold Callers' sign in the middle of the door, he said he didn't see it and told me they'd 'put in a new telephone exchange'(!) for broadband. I asked for a pamphlet, leaflet, or a phone number so I could call the company if I decided to investigate. He couldn't even give me a phone number! I told him that without contact details he was wasting my and his time. He went away.

A Kleeneze bloke also came to the door a while ago, asking for his catalogue. I said I didn't have one, and he heatedly said he knew I did because he'd posted it himself. I said I didn't remember seeing it, but all junk mail was chucked out for recycling, so it probably got recycled. He then became quite rude, and accused me of not giving a straight answer... It occurred to me later that perhaps this had happened to him a few times that day, but as far as I'm concerned junk mail is junk mail - I don't read it. If he'd wanted to lend me a catalogue, he should have come to the door with it to explain in person - at which point he'd see the 'No Cold Callers' notice.
  • VIRGIN. I worked for them briefly, and the training is harsh. They believe that they are entitled to knock on any door, and they say that if there is a sign saying no cold-callers, that the resident obviously has problems saying 'no' to anyone, and to treat them as a challenge!

    Thanks for the information.

So, in other words, virgin wants to bully the more vulnerable people who struggle to say no when pressed?

PENNINE ( the double glazing/conservatory firm ) Not only did their salesman ignore the " no cold callers" sign and ring the doorbell but he peered in through the front window when I didn't answer the door quick enough. Looking back I really should have complained about him.

Everest called on me but there excuse was " i am not here to sell only to give to you a free quote" also i had trouble getting I.D so i phoned the police and complained to everest .Their local area manager then phoned me and was more upset that i had phoned the police than the fact his salesman had ignored the cold caller sign and was reluctent to show his I.D which in this part of glasgow is issued by trading standards and strathclyde police. It turned out he was employed by everest so why the reluctance to identify himself

My advice as recieved from trading standards as regards cold calling is contact your local police or trading standards office and see if they have official "no cold callers signs" if you then get calls report it to the company concerned and tell them you are contacting trading standards who have also informed me that this under the law could amount to harrassment and under certain cicustances they may take action against the company concerned I live in Scotland where the law is sometimes diffirent but it is cetainly worth checking

    Various power companies (gas, electric)

about 6 charity bags through the door per week, mostly from eastern europe and of dubious "charitable" purpose..they also fit my kitchen bin as somebody else pointed out.

Endless takeaway flyers - go straight into recycling

Local window cleaners (the ones who use "fresh water systems")

    Gutter cleaners
