this is of course before prices went up 25%, so I'd assume the bit about it being half the price of services in europe is probably nonsense.

I posted an article the other day(cant recall which of the many postage threads it was)showing the price of stamps is lower than it would be, had it followed inflation over the decades.
In the end,it doesnt matter what other countries do or do not charge.
it is interesting the uproar it causes when compared to some of the other price rises people swallow0 -

That article doesn't backup what we were discussing (ie the claim that the service has half the price of anywhere else in europe).. another one here:

Again, pretty middle of the road before the 25% increase.
Not suprising to see all the socialist countries at the top of the pricing table.0 -

No I am full time. How do you think the work is prepared for delivery? Little pixie's collect it through the night perhaps. No, I start at 5, and work til just gone 2. The delivery side is only part of what we do each day.0 -

Yes! And we only have 1 bag, half filled, that show is 100% accurate !

Royal Mail is far far from perfect, and they make a hell of a lot of bad decisions, all geared up deliberately to make the business easier to privatise. I do however hate when we all get tarred with the same "lazy useless" brush which gets waved around every time something goes wrong.
Yes, you probably do get your mail much later now, that's because the business has shed over 50,000 jobs in the last few years, and those of us who are left have to absorb the workload and sadly take longer to deliver it. If 2 people take 3 hours apiece to do a round, and those rounds are merged, the remaining person isn't going to be able to do it in the same 3 hours. We don't like it anymore than the customers do, and most of the people I work with hate the poor service we're providing. But what choice do we have, it's our jobs to do it and take the abuse. And yes I do enjoy my job, and have no intention of leaving.0 -
My post arrives at about 2pm and provided it is within Royal Mains delivery aim by 4pm for the inner city then I am happy. Posties in my area doing a fantastic job and some times under difficult conditions.0

Have a look at the post(s) you replied to. asturdy2 made an assertion that UK post was half the price of anywhere in Europe and I asked for a reference since I strongly suspect* he/she is talking bollix.

I was providing info regarding price comparisons
I was neither proving nor disproving anyones point0 -
To me, the price rises seemed to be a clear message that looking to the future the Royal Mail wants to change into a premium serivce, so that they carry fewer items of mail at a higher price.
It makes sense to me - most of my everyday messages are by email / text etc, so if there is something that absolutely has to go by mail I'd pay a higher price for it. If a letter cost £1.50, say, to send first class it would make me think twice about whether to send it, but since sending a letter means printing it out, finding an envelope, buying a stamp, walking to the letter box, it is already more trouble than sitting at my pc and hitting the send button, so if it was that important to send the cost wouldn't be the thing that stopped me.0
