I am a rare breed of HR worker who doesn't look at employee's as a name and a number. HR staff are also EMPLOYEE'S themselves. Shocking I know.
I'm aware of that and I think i touched on it somewhere in this thread..HR have a tough time usually because line managers won't listen or be open to advice. Hence empoyee's suffering. This is a very narrow minded opinion of HR and I would recommend that you do some work shadowing in an HR department before critising openly on this forum.
Thing is I've often found HR do diddly squat - when being bullied at work or you find the company has screwed you over financially HR don't seem to give a damn. Management tell you to deal with HR and HR tell you to go to management. Pillar => post.I wonder why you have had run in's with enough of them???
Workplace spats with people intent on making life hell, wage queries, change of address not being actioned, underpaid... the list is endless with some companies.0 -

HR actually have very limited options when someone comes to be them claiming to be bullied. If there is evidence of it happening [witness statements, CCTV etc] then there is something tangible to present to the person being accused of the bullying. I have had many cases where the employee claiming bullying cannot put forward anything tangible to support their claim. How can we then accuse the employee of bullying based on the word of another employee? We are not judge and jury, we have to follow a fair process. It is a difficult process for the employee claiming bullying but Companies cannot just believe one person over the other. Imagine being the one wrongly accused of bullying and your company dismissed you but could not present you with any evidence? You'd have a claim for unfair dismissal and the company would be liable. This is a tiny summary of the real extent of such cases.
If you ever have an issue that you need to raise with HR, try to imagine what you would do if you owned the company and then go from there. HR have the luxury of being able to understand both sides, for the company and as an employee - hence the reason they work in HR.0
