I always tip 10% but round down rather than up. I usually give the shampooist £1 - what does everyone else give, 50p seems a bit mean.

I don't tip the owner of the salon but would otherwise tip 10%, and always give £1 to the hair-washer.

£45!!! for a hairwash, trim and a blasting with a hair dryer?? flippin 'eck...

I had 6 inches off my waist length hair this week, for a cut and blow dry it should have cost £15 - £18 but as it was on special offer, i only paid £10,
I also paid £7 for my daughter to have a dry trim and left a fiver tip for the two

I wouldnt normally have left this much but i was expecting to pay the full price for mine anyway, and she was very good with my little girl
(plus it probably costs them a few quid in shampoo and conditioner to do my hair! lol)

My hairdressers is quite expensive - it cost me £70 the other day for a few highlights round my face and a semi-pem colour - not cut as I'd had that done a couple of weeks earlier. I wondered about tipping but tbh by the time I've paid for the treatments I feel skint I always feel pressured to buy products as well. I don't tip the beauty therapist either - maybe I'm just getting meaner as I get older as I used to tip when I was younger.

Hi there! I am a hairdresser not currently employed as one but i do know that hairdressers and juniors get taxed on tips their tax code is different to make this so...Not a lot of people realise this. Its the same with waitresses/waiters and taxi drivers i think.
  • I have half head highlights and cut and blow dry usually...i try to alternate salon with college now for cheap cut & colour, but can't always do this due to days off etc. Owner of salon lives near to me and is obviously doing well...wheras for me every penny counts. Last time I went there I got really fed up when receptionist said to me..."thats just £55 today then"...JUST £55!?! Thats a heck of a lot to me so now I alternate when I can...Plus look out for offers such as Timotei etc to get free cut and just pay for colour...

i hateee tipping with a passion
but if i have my hair cut ill give them the change, even though it is kind of expensive about £40 i think last time
reason is because theyre our local hairdressers and we as a family have a familiarity with them all so feel it would be noticed if i didnt, dont think they'd cut well any less just
only go once every 6 months for a cut anyway

When you go to a hairdresers you a paying for a specific service. i.e to get your hair cut/washed/dyed whatever.
Therefore if the hairdresser does what you are paying for where is the need for a tip?

Would you tip the deli counter staff in tesco for cutting a lump of cheese or slicing some meat??? No.
Would you tip a bus driver? No, so why tip a taxi driver? They are both getting you to your desired destination!

On the other hand if a taxi driver goes out of his/her way and carries bags to your front door then that is above and beyond what is expected. As the charge is for getting from A to B then a tip is warranted for the extra service.

It's all down to personal preference but I only tip if someone has done something extra above the service I expect.

It is unfortunate that some people are in low paid jobs but no-one should expect tips as a right.
