When I go to my usual hairdresser, he usually cuts my hair free and tells me to put a pint in for him at the local (where I drink too). Who said going to the pub isn't moneysaving? :p

If I'm somewhere else I usually leave a quid tip. But then I have never paid more than 8 quid for a haircut, so it works out more than 10% :)
  • If I have a good cut and colour I tip (£70 for work £5 tip) but if its only ok i don't!
However how about buying something as a token i.e a nice packet of biscuits or bars instead of a tip somtimes. say 6 pack of choccie bars is £1.50 and all that work in salon can get one! CHeaper than tipping but still shows your appreciation..............
  • I used to be a trainee hairdresser and got paid £2 an hour!!!(5yrs ago) I only washed hair and did cleaning. When a woman tipped me £5 I nearly cried, it was unbeliveable for me to have money in my hand. Had a nice time in New Look buying myself a treat!!
I'm getting older, and lifes getting harder!

I tend to tip my hairdresser 80% of the time even though I can't really afford to. Have been going to him for around 8 years now and he always does exactly as I ask and we have a nice chat and laugh etc while I am there. I always have colour, trim and wash and I don't have it cut inbetween. As my hair is long and naturally dead straight I don't like paying for a blow dry cos to my hind, theres no point as it dries poker straight.
So.. my hairdresser just gives it a bit of a blast so its just damp/nearly dry so he can see the colour properly and never charges me for the drying. He charges me £65 and I always give him a fiver. Not 10% I know but this is all I can afford and can't afford to tip the girl that washes my hair unfortunately.

i used to be a hairdresser some years ago (now a lawyer) and the general rule should be about 10% tip if you're happy with it.
people who don't tip when they receive good service are mean. you can't take it with you!

  • :D Hi everyone, this is the first time i have used a chat forum hope i don't muck it up!

I am a hairdresser, and i do very well in tips, this is great as we do not get wonderfrul rates of pay!

If your stylist has given you a great hairstyle and made you feel good about yourself, then i think it is good to tip them, However if you are not very satisfied and dony'tfeel happy when you leave , don't tip.

As for the salon being expensive, this money doesn't normally go in the stylist pocket so it is still nice to show your apprciation with a tip, it doesn't have to be a big one, all tips are greatly appreciated!!!!!!!

No I don't! I was a secretary for 25 years. No client of the companies I worked for ever came in and gave me a tip for doing my job! Because that is it, they are doing their job. They should be doing a good job in the first place and that is what they are being paid for. Why should the client have to pay more just because the owner doesn't pay them enough! We already pay enough for hair cuts. After all, when did this "creative art director" "technician" rubbish come into hairdressers.

If people aren't being tipped enough to deserve taxing then surely there should be a way of getting the tax code altered? I would be more at ease with assisting with a campaign to do this, and/or to sort out a reasonable pay scale then I would be with tipping.
I used to tip taxi drivers when I was full time in a reasonably paid job (as I thought) then I found out how much they were actually earning and stopped. I felt a bit odd waiting for my change the first few times, but soon got over it.
Now that I am not working at all then I save up for a haircut and do not tip. I am pleasant and polite, but if I ever saw someone hanging about with their hand out (even metaphorically) then I would probably never go back but wish that I had the nerve to complain to the owner!

    I just round it up...

Normally my haircut is £25 (wash, trim, blowdry) and I just round it up to £30

I don't mind tipping hairdressers, if they have done a good job and I am happy.

I wouldn't tip a taxi driver though - they charge enough as it is.:D
