I feel so tight as i am having my haircut for £78 tomorrow(includes full head highlights) and i nearly fell of my chair when i found out the amount. How much would you tip for that? I cant really afford that price but after a home colouring disaster where i ended up with yellow frizzy hair and an additional £150 to put it right i cant even afford to highlight my hair at home anymore!
It is not owner but one of top stylists.0 -
I would give £5 and leave it at that!!!;)

I used to tip my hairwashers when i went to local hairdressers but that was only coz they were usually only 14/15 or so and getting pitance. Or sometimes they were on work experience so getting nothing for their good work - i mean i wouldnt wash peoples hair. And as a beauty therapist i wouldnt expect tips, i would prob be a tad offended!
I used to work as a junior from the age of 15-17 and sadly did have to rely on tips from customers to supplement the fact that I got £18 for a 9-5 (Sometimes 6 when they got nattering/b*tching) days work.
Had to wash some truly disgusting hair doing that, I mean hadn't been washed in weeks sort of thing! Thankfully these people were very nice and always gave me a couple of quid for it, otherwise that would have made me pack it in. Of course I was also the one that greeted them, made them as many cups of tea/coffee they could drink, sorted out their customer cards and such. Again, had it not been for the tips I wouldn't have been able to continue on as they were what put me through college paying for my books and such.
Of course a lot of people didn't tip too, mainly it was those who had to save up for the hairdressers as a treat and that was fair. But if you can and you want to, even 50p can make a person feel appreciated!
Even the hairdressers at mine were tipped, but to be fair it was an independant and very reasonably priced salon so people didn't mind doing that. I could see taking an issue when you've spent a small fortune on the cut itself!
Cut my own hair now after a bad experience, but should I ever go to the hairdressers I'll be tipping the junior that washes and the hairdresser that cuts (Though due to experience I'll be tipping the junior more, in solidarity if you see what I mean!).

Do hairdressers get a percentage from any products sold in the salon?
Every time i go to a salon, I get the impression that they are trying very hard to sell me expensive hairstyling products and shampoos.0 -
It had to tip £8. I wish 1 person would do your hair as i had colourist which did a good job and stylist and shampooist. It really makes tips add up or else you feel bad.
Just one person please ......should have left something for the cleaner too!0 -
I just happened across this thread and thought I would read it for a bit of a nose.
I think that you should all tip the hairdresser more. After all if you are happy with the service, why not show your appreciation with a tip, the bigger the better!
My wife always cuts my hair. She's a hairdresser, and yes I tip her with a cup of tea!
But seriously i have asked my wife about tipping the hairdresser, and the cost of some hair do's over the years.
The hairdressers view is that they are not paid enough. They have to train to become a hiardresser and it is a very skilled job if you are good at it. MY wife says that if they were to charge to rate that countries like @America and Austrailia do then there would be no need for tipping, as in those counries they are paid well.
But to tip or not to tip, must be up to the coustomer; and you should never feel guilty for not doing so.
Happy hair cuts!!!!!!!!!!!!Lic.0 -
Good point but its wierd how nurses also often have poor wages and may spend a lot of time with us but we dont tip them! Shame really. I just find it wierd how we tip some certain industries but not others.0

I'm gonna sound a right scrooge now, but my hair cut costs £20, and I leave a quid tip. I have it cut every 8weeks or so.
on the other hand, my hubby goes to the barbers, every 2 weeks for a £7 cut, but pays a tenner!!!!
sobefore tip, I pay £120 a year for haircuts, and he pays £182!!!!!!! My hairs much longer than his!!!:eek:0 -
To have my hair cut and coloured it costs £28 - i give her £30.Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly.0

I don't think that giving anyone a couple of pounds is an insult... I wish several people a day would give me a couple of quid each! It all adds up!
I do tip my hairdresser, but only a couple of pounds, I usually make the figure up to a round amount. I wouldn't tip a note though - think that's loads - but then my haircuts only cost a few pounds.... there ok - but never fab to be honest!SW: Wk1 (5) Wk2 (2.5) Wk3 - Wk 4 (4) Wk 5 - (1.5) Wk 6 (1) Total off 1 stone!:j0
