Do you tip the hairdresser?

I hope I haven't made anybody 'feel' mean... tipping is purely your preference and maybe as I am older its just something that I have been doing for many years... maybe NOT tipping is better in this day and age , its certainly cheaper:rotfl: ... but I just know I couldn't walk out without leaving the girl a tip...#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

I had a conversation about this with my hairdresser. She owns the salon and when my mum had the owner of a salon do her hair, she didn't tip them. She said it was to show appreciation and give them a bit of extra money, but if they owned the salon then if you liked the cut you went back and that would mean extra profit etc. if you see what I mean.
Always tipped the junior that washed hair, but if they are older- seems a bit patronising.
Usual for tip is 10%, but due to financial constraints that probably wouldn't mean £5 for £50, probably a few pound coins - I probably wouldn't tip with a note as it would seem too much.
Though i have the excuse of being a student i never tip!! These people are not there providing a service for nothing, they are getting paid for doing so. I never got tipped for working in a crummy supermarket and i didnt expect so either....people say awww they are being paid a poor wage, well its the employers responsbility to deal with that and thankfully most people are getting the national miniumum wage in this country.
If i want to show my appreciation i express my gratitude by saying thank you very much and thats great, see you again soon. It doesn't just boil down to money
The only exception for me is when travelling abroad to a particulary poor country where these people actually RELY on the tips as it is the main source of their income and they actually appreciate it0 -
Thanks all - didnt mean to start a dispute! I will take out an extra fiver for the cash machine (if it permits it, lol) and keep hold of it and then make my decision after the cut. Im still not sure if i should but we'll see, just a tad worried i might offend but that might be me being silly - as a therapist i would never want a tip, just like i hate recieving money as a gift in anyway - i think an honest thank you and keeping someone as your loyal hairdresser is worth more. And yep she is a tad older than me too! Maybe i'll find out when her birthday is or something and get her a little something - i mean i have been going to her for over two years and she is lovely! Not sure yet - still!Mummy of 3 lovely munchkins :smileyhea0

Hi there - I go every 6 weeks, pay about £32 for a senior stylist (ie pay more for her), and I never tip anyone (stylist or junior). This price is a discounted price for employees of the company I work for. It's a smallish town in Cheshire.0

A mate is a Senior Stylist at Tony and Guy. Trust me, they earn good money there.
If you can only just afford the hair cut then keep it at that.
You didnt tip before so why start now?

Haha, guess what! After all that, i went there and my hairdresser had quit a few hours before i got there. Poor girl came over to tell me and that she would be doing my hair today, i gave her the most '!!!!!! no you aint' look ever (i didnt mean to it was immediate reaction that happened before i could even think about it).:o
She turned out to be a lovely girl, did a fairly decent job (nothing fantastic), She was a standard stylist - not 'art director' which is the girl i usually see. So my ok haircut was cheaper and she was lingering around me for a tip while i was at the till and i felt sorry for her and gave her a fiver  I cant believe i just went against everything and tipped her for the wrong reason!!!! Oh well, will be hunting out my old hairdresser and see where she is planning to go next - i will be a stalker and follow her just so i can have amazing hairstyles as everyone calles them!!! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:Mummy of 3 lovely munchkins :smileyhea0 -

My DD is a 'Manager' of a Supercuts salon in the South East. Everyone goes back to her for their haircuts as they like her. She rarely gets tips though and even though she is the Manager gets a ridiculous £6 an hour wages! Doubt if she will ever afford to leave home.0
