Do you tip the hairdresser?

Hi, just wandered about this as i was recently having a convo with my bessie mate:
Basically i go to get my hair cut about every 8 weeks (ish, when i can afford it) but it costs me £50:eek: . I need to cut my hair this often as i have a short funky style that looks awful if left. I get it cut in Tony & Guy, purely because i hate having people touch my hair and i have come to trust my hairdresser of the past two years(she is amazing). I have had a few horrors from other hairdressers and thats why i now pay this much because im certain i'll love what i come out with. If she is not in they know not to book me in with anyone else and that i'll just wait till she is back.
Now my friend just had her hair cut elsewhere for about £30 and she left a £10 tip (apparently as she always does) but im going to be brutally honest and say that she is never more than jsut satisfied with her haircuts - and to be honest i agree they dont have any wow factor and end up looking nothing like she asks for. (yes, we are in our early 20's and sadly appearance does matter alot:D ).
So i just wandered how many of you tip the hairdresser (or washer) and would you tip if you were paying £50 for a wash, cut and style? Even though you really really love the outcome?
Am i being stingy by not doing so? If so how much would you tip at this price?
(Lol, im heading to the hairdressers this eve so im wondering if i should re-write my budget)

I pay £29 to have my hair cut and blow dried and I usually give the lady who does it £2-3 tip (depending on what change I have got). Would NEVER leave as much as £10, that seems ridiculous and I definitely couldn't afford it.Sorting my life out to give a better life to my:heartsmil 2 gorgeous boys :heartsmil0

I always tip the hairdresser and the washer, and I guess if I could afford £50 for a haircut (which I can't) I would at least leave £5 tip seems a bit mean not to ....hairdressers get !!!! money usually and they make it up with tips so if no one tipped they would be on very low wage....
I get just as good a haircut from the girl up the road.... I think these fashionable hairdressers are a ripoff and charge what they like for the same thing you get in a local 'good' hairdresser#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

Lol, i wish i could find a 'good' local haidresser but i love to llok different and quirky and even when i show them a photo i always come out looking like a prat! A
lso my haidresser is great because she gets on with the job rather than making useless conversation like most do(that is a major put off as it makes me very uncomfortable for some reason). Not saying that she isnt friendly because she deffinately is, she genuinely remembers me from each time and the conversations we did have, or asks after my daughter who she always pops into the waiting area to see. Lol, and as a beauty therapist (in training at mo) i can tell you they often keep a little book that they put notes in and check back to make you feel remembered - its a little trick to make you feel special. Its a great trick, but she is definately genuine and doesnt just natter nonsense the whole way through the haircut.
So i suppose its my own fault for paying that much but hey, i know i'll love it so i dont mind.
I always thought that as one of their top hairdressers she must be getting a fair bit out of it - but now maybe i will think again and re-budget and scrape together a fiver or a bit more then!
Thank you!Mummy of 3 lovely munchkins :smileyhea0 -
And im not well off in anyway (quite broke actually)- this is just my vice - i save up for it, rather than buy chocolate or make up or anything that are peoples usually vice's so no probs with forking out that much. Just baffled by the whole tip leaving thing as i already pay so much! Lol if they put up their prices though i will be lost for sure!Mummy of 3 lovely munchkins :smileyhea0

Nope - not personally - if they want more they should charge more in the first place. Their wage is really not my problem - do you tip people in supermarkets? Some of them are on bad pay too! If you start tipping where do you stop?0

See don't meen to be mean but that was my take on it too - they are a huge brand and already charge a fortune so why pay more!
I used to tip my hairwashers when i went to local hairdressers but that was only coz they were usually only 14/15 or so and getting pitance. Or sometimes they were on work experience so getting nothing for their good work - i mean i wouldnt wash peoples hair. And as a beauty therapist i wouldnt expect tips, i would prob be a tad offended!Mummy of 3 lovely munchkins :smileyhea0 -
Just because posh hairdressers charge you a fortune does not mean they pay their stylists good money its not the staff that sets the prices in the salon .... if I like the person cutting my hair and she does a good job then I tip her.... Its a bit like working as a waitress how many of you 'don't' leave a tip in a restaurant if you have good service?...#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

Oh now I feel mean.
I had a conversation about this with my hairdresser. She owns the salon and when my mum had the owner of a salon do her hair, she didn't tip them. She said it was to show appreciation and give them a bit of extra money, but if they owned the salon then if you liked the cut you went back and that would mean extra profit etc. if you see what I mean.
Always tipped the junior that washed hair, but if they are older- seems a bit patronising.
Usual for tip is 10%, but due to financial constraints that probably wouldn't mean £5 for £50, probably a few pound coins - I probably wouldn't tip with a note as it would seem too much.0 -
I realise that but its just the fact that why is there so much dissaproval if you dont tip - i have never tipped her yet she always seems happy to see me, if they ever call she always calls me personally even though she says she is not supposed to, that is down to the receptionist, (basically i worked with a few of her good friends so she is a bit moer genuine).
I dont want to offend her if she has the same veiws as me about tipping but i was just wandering if im being stingy - i can only just about afford the haircut - should i really have to head elsewhere and get a less satisfactory haircut just for the sake of being able to leave a tip?Mummy of 3 lovely munchkins :smileyhea0
