It's simply a loophole that can be used just like the tax avoidance ones millionaires and fat cat companies use to shirk their liabilities to the country. That's what needs to be cracked on not young mrs parent doing some ironing to make ends meet and fight for survival.0 -

Have you been hiding under your bridge.
It might have been a loophole but not anymore.
Are you not aware they are cracking down on self employed people?
Before, i could have claimed i sold on ebay for 16 hours a week which would mean no signing on and working tax credits.
Then after deducting the cost of broadband, electric etc i would declare a profit of £0 entitling me to a full WTC award.
In my eyes they are just as bad as someone who defrauds the system.0 -
i live in a valley in south wales there are no cleaning /ironing jobs or even bar jobs for that matter im asking for help off people not people arguing making out that we are to lazy to find a further 8 hours to help us still keep my job, my partner as done is best an so have i, ive asked for advice on what to do not for people to critisize what we are doing wrong we know that we need to find 8 hours weather its me or my partner but there are no 8 hour or more jobs that we can apply for. we dont live in a city or town we live in a valley which employment is very low much lower than cities an towns.
All the more reason not to give up a secure job!!0 -
The OP, if she wants to go down the self-employed route, must understand the conditions for claiming WTC in a SE capacity and keep thorough records.
She needs to understand, for example, that it's not about appearing to be busy for 8 hours but that the time spent is on business activities and in the expectation of receiving payment.
Also, she must be meticulous with keeping business records (as per the HMRC website, info also on the Business Link website).
The posts we see on the forum from the SE investigated for WTC compliance by the HMRC (and then have their WTC stopped and a demand to pay back the sums they've received) seem to be rather casual in their approach (unbusiness like might be another term) and therefore have little evidence that they have been working the hours they say or actively seeking clients.0 -

Not really. The amount of wtc etc would be the same if not less than the amount they could get if they were on job seekers. They are just as bad as millionaire tax avoiders? Those that ought to be paying way more than working tax self employed? How about those that buy up farming subsidies and claim them but do no farming what so ever? Perfectly legal.0 -

Exactly, the 'self-employed'/WTC scam is ending next year when Universal Credits are introduced. The self-employed will be deemed to earn (at least) minimum wage for the hours that they claim to have worked.
HMRC are already clamping down on this loophole, with self-employed WTC claimants being presented with massive bills for overpayment as they are deemed to have been running non-viable, non-profitable businesses in order to claim WTC, in some cases repayments are backdated over a few years.0 -

Pity they don't clamp down on proper loop holes like those exploited by the super rich and fat companies.
So will all self employed people have to earn minimum wage now then? That minimum wage legislation is being changed too is it to take account of that?
I just hope they catch a cold by pushing up the unemployment figures which is all it will do. So it shifts people from tax credits to job seekers and income support. Very clever. Not.0
